Hey all, fairly new to VDSL and the world of Fritz...  VDSL has been an excellent step up from the old ADSL2, however, I seem to be getting a whole heap of errors - now these haven't affected downloads (MD5 checks all seem to be fine so far on my android ROM downloads etc).  Finally got off my arse and took some screenshots to ask the knowledgeable people around here for opinions/suggestions.

After reading through the VDSL tuning guide, I realise these are devices are fairly sensitive, mine is on an Eaton UPS - this is the only device hanging off of this.  The line itself has been stable as, only resync due to DLM.  I've noticed since I've dropped from what I think was DLM 1 to DLM 2 (or 4?) the number of unrecoverable errors have dropped, but this steadily increases over time.

Any thoughts?  Do you think I've got a dodgy Fritz?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

3CRCPM, isnt enough to loose you DLM-2 ild expect it was higher when you wre on DLM-1

how was your installation? is a master filter installed?

while 3CRCPM isnt toooo bad, its not favourable - DLM-1 can take about 6~10CRCPM before it looses it.

its not only the fritz that is sensitive, but any VDSL device, thefritz simply presents it in what i see as a very easy to understand way.

Thanks for the quick response! The chorus (downer) tech that installed the service put a new master filter on, disconnected all other connections to internal wiring (naked service) and ran new cat 6 (from memory) to a dedicated point.  This run would be 15m at a guess from the filter to where the fritz lives.

As for the error rate, after a 5 min cool down period (on DLM-1) errors wouldn't be really evident till a few hours.  I think I remember seeing the hourly scale go up to 1500 or 2000 before it did a resync and dropped a DLM level (this was after 2.5 weeks while I was away).

So come home after a few days and things aren't looking good...

Apart from unplugging it for 5min every few days, is there something I can look at doing?  At this rate I reckon I will just keep getting bumped down DLM's!

on the upside, your on a 0inp 8ms profile. if it goes up down a profile, you have 2 more 8ms profiles to sit on.

I have very similar stats to you and have had similar error issues.

I had to turn my line settings to the middle on line stability which helped a heap with my errors. DON'T adjust this unless your phone line is disconnected thou as you will probably lock out your port!!!

The storm a few weeks back screwed all my VDSL up so currently my sync is quite low its normally around 36k. Profile is DLM-2 currently...not sure why it says latency fast either. ALso trying to resolve the Central exchange errors which are new as well.....

Sweet, I will try having a play with the line stability setting.  I see there's a recommended way of making these changes on the main VDSL tuning thread:

1) Physically disconnect the line from the Fritz
2) Apply tweaks & allow the Fritz to reboot
3) Power off the Fritz for 5 minutes
4) Plug the line back into the Fritz and power it on

Will reply with results in a few days time!

Quick update, we went away for the weekend and coming home on Sunday arvo I logged into the Fritz to have a play to realise DLM has bumped me down another level (INP definitely showing a 1 now) eek....
Thought it was best not to do the resync last night so will do it today with the increased stability change! Uh oh, spaghettio

See how it goes..

if your happy with 8ms profiles, the 1INP profile would probably be your favourite.

before i moved, i had a line that was slightly hairy on DLM-1 so i would keep it locked as much as i could, at DLM-4. what this resulted in, was a slightly faster sync rate and a backstop to fall back onto should DLM decide to move a profile back - i didnt want to touch those 16ms profiles!

Quick update...
I've set the Intended signal-to-noise ratio to the middle setting and the errors and sync have come down.  Sync by about 3000 kbit/s, but still plenty fast (it's funny how the attainable rate has also dropped).  Errors are sporadic to say the least.

I will try to refrain from tweaking and just let things be!!

looking at your errors there, thats next to nothing.

your sync rate will be lower while your snr is pulled up.

im average 0.07 CRCPM with the rain (rather erratic, some days will go without any errors at all.)

DLMs highly unlikely to have an issue with your line.

Thanks for the help and advice guys. I think I'll leave things be as much as I can for now!

Quite a funny story, I was talking to my neighbour (house is attached to ours - also one of the reasons I can't get fibre) and she was saying she's hearing Newstalk ZB on her phone line. Hmm, I wonder how much this has to do with my errors! haha

Glad it helped yours. Mines still rubbish and now im getting the we can't do anything from Snap its within spec blah blah blah. Not really sure how disconnects everyday and these kind of errors below are within any kind of spec. This has all happened since the big storm 3-4 weeks ago not sure where to go from here= (

interesting.. snrs on the rise and you had an increase in speed still.

likely DLM made a minor move around with a few thing there.

0.65CRCPM is perfectly fine, your hardly likely to notice it!

leave the connection constant now, and let bitswap do its thing, likely your errors will drop down a bit.
