I heard on the NZ Tech Podcast yesterday that 2D is introducing new prepay data roaming packages to Ozz . 300Meg for 7 days @ $10

Does anyone from 2 Degrees know when this will come in as I' going there July 18 for a week and this would be ideal..??

Soon. I found a slight problem at the last minute which meant they couldn't launch last Sunday night with the rates as planned. I don't have a date yet, sorry - there are some downstream systems that still need fixing.

For me, I just pickup an Optus sim because all I need is Data and I can handle calls/etc anytime.

$2/day for 500MB day

Doubt 2degrees can beat that. Again, your needs may be different if you need to be contactable on your number

Maybe not, but we sure as heck are better than if you were going the other way. My mother is here at the moment looking after the kids over the school holidays. When she arrived, Telstra helpfully offered her 300MB for $85 (AU)... As opposed to our 300MB for $10 (NZ). Needless to say, she got a 2degrees SIM the next day. :-)

I normally do the Optus thing but I don't need SMS or voice so these new packs are what I will do in the future rather than carting around 2 phones.

Sounds good, but how much is the minimum top-up?

I think $5. I paid $20 that would expire after 20 days but it lasted the 10 days as expected. Be wary this deal isn't as great as it seems. They charge per 1mb session and your credit expires within days. I went through 2gb in a week tho lol.

FYI - I'm moving to oz next month and will pickup the Vodafone $40/mo deal.

vodafone AU data speeds are cr@p. they get tens of thousands of customer complaints every month. i suggest virgin. you have been warned.

Disagree. Depends where you are of course tho.

I live in Melbourne and have two phones. A personal phone on Vodafone, and a work phone on Optus.

Vodafone blows Optus out of the water. Sure, about 3-4 years ago they had some pretty major network issues. But they have a few less customers as a result (so less congestion), and have spent more than a billion dollars upgrading the network since.

Until recently, I also had a 3G iPad running on Telstra. Comparing all three networks, Vodafone was the clear winner in performance and reliability. Telstra has an advantage if you need rural coverage, but they also charge a steep premium for their services, that I just didn't find worth it.

Ok so they have fixed their problems now :) my sister in law left then last year, still complaining about poor speeds, but I guess what a differencece a year makes eh

VF have had Australia's best network for speed for at least the last 18 months since their new network was complete. The fact they have far fewer users clearly helps as well.

Virgin are just a MVNO on Optus which is without a doubt Australia's worst network speed wise - the funny thing about people trashing Vodafone was that most of the infrastructure was part of their Optus/VF joint venture. Their network improvements started when they moved to their own Huawei network.

Vodafone are also the only carrier to have 20Mhz of 1800 nationwide for LTE, meaning they have an automatic speed advantage over Optus and Telstra.
