Hi, I've just moved to Greenlane and I believe Orcon have put me on a LLU connection.

We're using a Genius Black router, which was working well on our old connection in Hamilton. I was happily getting a 15mbit connection with this router.

Connection stats pretty poor, as below:

The best I have seen the router connect at is 9000kbps down, and we are getting frequent disconnects, 64 in the last 4 days. 20 of these are probably from me moving things around and changing router settings, but its certainly too high.

Current Speed test, from speedtest.orcon.net.nz:

Download Speed: 3972 kbps (496.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 351 kbps (43.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 190 ms

I just tried playing a bit of Heroes & Generals, that was a waste of time (massive rubber banding)

General web browsing is horribly slow.

The router is connected to the master Jack, no other devices connected, infact I have disconnected the rest of the jack points. The house wiring looks to be about 20 years old, so could potentially be issues. We don't have a splitter installed.

When the Chorus tech did the install, I got him to do a quick line test and he thought the numbers looked as good as to be expected, since we are going right back to the exchange.

Will Orcon switch me to a normal cabinet connection?

And if not, can I expect better from my LLU?

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

on the note of your sync speeds.

Looking over them, you would most likely benefit a fair bit from installing a Master Splitter, Ild Recommend talking to coffeebaron here, he offers a pretty good price compared to chorus doing it.

Cant really make any assumptions on your error rates, as you have not supplied an uptime value, repost a fresh copy with the dsl uptime counter? Suspect your high error rate could be the cause for lower than expected speedtests there.

As for the latency, try Tzois thread suggestion? I personally have not been following that thread so i cant comment. 190 ms does not look right however.

try a traceroute to say, trademe and post the results.

Make sure all your testing is done over Ethernet, and there is no other activity on your network.

Assuming your not dealing with a case of being on LLU when you should be on Wholesale (which is very uncommon nodays.) Ild say your real issue is the fact that your Internal wiring is subpar, and due to the lower snr it doesnt preform aswell.

I wouldn't expect to have exactly 15mbit back however.

A quick speed test this morning shows much better results:

So I'd say I'm likely sufferering peak congestion, however I still expect more that this, and a more stable connection.

Chorus maps show me clearly within the >20mbps zone, although Orcon claim we are too far away for VDSL. I'd be happy with anything over 10mbps, and a better upstream would help to.

A line test this morning indicates internal wiring or corrosion at the pillar, will arrange a tech to visit and confirm/resolve.

Peak congestion or not, you have a line fault as i suspected, and confirmed by FireEngine.

Resolve that first, then look at your congestion as you still have large error counts to remove from the equation.

Yes. you are on LLU. Chorus gear runs at 12dB, your sitting on 9dB.

Speedtest looking more positive.

I'd still like more downstream, but as long as the connection is solid, I might be able hang out till fibre comes next year.

Error rate much improved!

I'll be doing some gaming tonight, will see how it copes.

now look to your internal wiring and perfect it... Ild say that little extra boost in the download that your looking for is possible.
