Im not sure why im trying so hard to give slingshot my money for fibre, Orcon will take my money and so will telecom. I am an existing adsl subscriber and I have had a great service so far.

However slingshot's system seems to be oblivious to several locations around Tauranga having fibre installed. When trying to sign up on their website I'm told that fibre in not available in my area when is been available since August last year. Other providers such as Orcon and telecom are ready to have me sign up and their site detects that UFB is available for me.

I have tried their web support, the standard response is (copied from email)
"Unfortunately Slingshot does not have access to UFB cables to your address which is why we cannot supply you with the Fibre service. In this case there are only certain providers who ca use those lines and unfortunately we are not one of them it is negative as a service we can proviode you.I have double checked that street address also, the website would be going off the same database that shows us we cannot provide you with fibre."

I'm not the only one with this problem as someone else in my office has tried and had long conversations which have gone something like... (as relayed to me)

S: Sorry we cannot provide you fibre
C: But you can provide fibre to the same locations as telecom, in fact im told you buy your fibre service from telecom
S: Yes
C: and telecom can supply me but you can't, can you please recheck.
S: Yes, we can supply you, please let me transfer you endlessly around the building till you give up.

So why the rant, no one in slingshot seems to be catching on that there is a problem with the system that detects if an address had UFB or not and I know i'm not the only one.
I understand there is someone from slingshot who views these forms, so message me and ill will provide you with our addresses so you have have some examples to diagnose what going wrong.

Each ISP needs to install equipment in each city or town - it seems that Slingshot doesn't have any in Tauranga as this list doesn't contain Slingshot.

The list shows call plus though, am I incorrect to assume that that is the same thing?

Nevermind I noticed the dot showing call plus only supplying businesses.

Thanks for your response by the way, if they don't supply us that fine but I wanted to know for sure before I move providers.

Oh well, my understand is that slingshot rents gear from Telecom, so where ever Telecom is slingshot is.
I guess ill give up and go to another provider.

Totally incorrect.

Slingshot (and every other ISP) wholesale services from Chorus (which is not Spark/Telecom) and each of the LFCs that are deploying fibre in different areas. Spark/Telecom also have nothing at all to do with Chorus.

Chorus are not the LFC in Tauranga and have nothing to do with the rollout there, UFF are the LFC there. Slingshot do not yet chosen to deploy equipment into Tauranga and offer services over UFF in this area.

Would that be why here in Mount Maunganui, in my apartment block, someone here has fiber as there is a fiber cabinet on the first floor, but slingshot say its not available.

Also I cannot get on "Slingshot's Better Network" either. I tried to get the 20 homeline services for $5 but coudn't. Ended up with Caller ID for $4.50 alone.

I do like slingshot but.....

You have to be careful with Slingshot. When we signed up for them they informed us that we would be able to upgrade from VDSL to Fibre and remain on the same contract. A couple months later when we requested this we were informed that Slingshot doesn't offer Fibre in our area (Whangarei). They have been good enough to waive the contract cancellation fee, but it would have been nice to know that they didn't offer Fibre in our city before we signed up with them.

It's just not available because Slingshot don't deal with UFF, Enable or Northpower.

One thing which has been discussed in many threads on here that people people need to understand is that the days of every ISP providing DSL services nationwide are gone. This scenario does not and will never exist with UFB since cheap Chorus tail services are not available as part of UFB like they are with UBA copper services. While some providers will provide coverage in many areas, they won't provide it elsewhere due to the costs involved.

We've lit 1Gbps fibre services into the basement of many apartment blocks in the Mount area.

"Fibre to the basement".

I'll drop you a PM in case you're in one of our MDUs.

This barrier to entering the regions may soon be history.

There are new backhaul options available from a number of providers where you pay an aggregated bandwidth charge for your remote tails - I've also seen quotes for a replica of Chorus TES but for UFB.

There have been a number of options out there for quite some time. Ultimately the problem is when you start looking at bandwidth requirements for UFB they'll potentially never be affordable enough to compete with large providers selling UFB services essentially at cost.

Internet pricing will be an interesting thing over the next year in NZ, I think we've already seen entry UFB pricing hit the market that will potentially be unsustainable in the long term.

Hi guys,
Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been off work.
We plan to launch with the other LFCs very soon.
Of course - we'll let Geekzoners know as soon as we have something to announce :)
Thanks!

Thanks for the PM. Confirmed your apartment block is a "fibre to the basement" setup so you can take up services with either us or another local ISP - but fibre to your individual apartment isn't presently available which is why none of the national ISPs will be able to provide service right now.
