Hi all,

I am just wanting to know if someone could shed some light on my recent VDSL upgrade from ADSL in regards to the speed and Dynamic Line Management (DLM).

It's been around 11 days since the install and the line rate has actually dropped from 35823 Kbps to 32717 Kbps and the actual attainable download speed on the first day was 34.5Mbps and now it's an absolute maximum of 28Mbps. Upload has also decreased from 8944Kbps to 6912Kbps.

Just wondering if this is normal for DLM to slow the speed down over the tuning period?

I've accepted the fact I'll be stuck on 8b due to my distance from the exchange, so that's not an issue here.

I also rebooted my modem a few times during the 10 day period. Would this have been interpreted as a line drop by DLM?

If anyone could help, that'd be fantastic!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Yup, it is normal for DLM to either increase or decrease your speed during the "training period" - depending on line stability or instability.

Ah ok, not to worry then!

In regards to me restarting my modem, would that have caused DLM to interpret it as line instability?

Absolutely, in other posts it has been said that users should refrain from restarting their devices while DLM is doing its thing.

agreed. To many disconnections and DLM will take a second look

Generally 2 reasonably close together disconnections in a day will kill DLM-1.

what was you ping when you started and what is it now?

No idea what my ping was before, sorry!! My current ping is 27ms.

When I restarted my modem, it was only once a day and generally 2-3 days apart. Two were unavoidable setting change reboots and one was me accidentally unplugging the modem when rearranging a powerboard.

there is not a lot you can do if you have a master splitter and dedicated wiring for the modem

I don't have a master splitter installed as there is no need because I don't have a POTS line. I find it odd that the Chorus technician didn't disconnect the old jacks in the house as I won't be using them after he installed the RJ45 one. I'll climb under the house today and disconnect the rats nest of wiring from the line and have it coming from the street directly to the RJ45 VDSL jack.

I used this calculator http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php to figure out my distance from the exchange approximately and found that I'm barely within the VDSL coverage area.

You should have had a master splitter installed regardless of whether you need or use POTS. This is what the tech should do on every new install, unless the premises have already had VDSL - in which case there would already be a master splitter. OR if you had in past paid to have one installed/ DIY

You should have had a master splitter installed regardless of whether you need or use POTS. I know for a fact there's no splitter on the line at all. The Chorus technician was a young guy and didn't really speak. Seemed as if it was his first callout. Would there really be any benefit of me buying and installing one myself or just running line from street to jack?

I wish I could replace the line from the street because it's from the 70's - however I can't access it as it runs through the walls and seems to be clipped in there. I can't pull on it to feed more through. :(
