Hi,

I am on Orcon ULL and I have been seeing ping spikes in games such as CS:GO and just on the internet. I have done speedtests on wired with ping up to 7000ms ping. I have mostly seen it at around 10pm. I think it might be happening because we have visitors and a lot of people connected to the wifi currently. I am using the Orcon Genius White, so if anyone else has this router and the same problems please let me know. How can I fix this?

I'm on ADSL2+, with 24.5dB attenuation and 16mbps down 1mbps up, located in Whangaparaoa and since i'm on ULL 9dB SNR. I have a master filter installed

Thanks.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

As discussed before when you've talked about this - are you saturating your upstream? What did Orcon say when you contacted them?

I have checked and we aren't saturating it, but I will check again later. I can't remember what they said but I will go through my emails now.

Edit: I did improve it by closing some ports open to my server last time so I will close all ports and check.

that very much sounds like you had a saturation issue which you fixed by closing the holes in-which the satiation was being caused on.

if you have such an issue with your connection, how can you not remember orcons response even if its paraphrased?

It was a while ago that I had the problem. After emailing them many times and since the problem was not consistent I couldn't get any speedtests of the problem so they didn't do anything. Once I get some speedtests I will ask them again but it is hard as it is not consistent

Are these 'ping meters' actually accurate in games? I see a lot of people coming on here and moaning about their latency but know one actually shows a PROPER latency test to show the issue.

You need to do some decent checks with ping, tracert or pathping.

Also if you have a server on your lan that is open to the world then that is probably your issue. I personally think anyone with an open server on their home connection is plain mad. If you want mates to connect to you then set up a vpn server.

ild love to see your wan utilization to go with those tests......

The first screams upstream congestion to me.

the second looks more like downstream, wouldnt surprise me if torrents were involved at a quick look.

Yep - again, your bandwidth is getting soaked. If it really bothers you get a router like a Mikrotik that can associate traffic to pools and a faster connection.

Comparing those speedtests to your DSL sync rates - get a router that does QoS and give your gaming traffic higher priority. There's something there saturating your connection - only you can find out what it is.

Disconnect everything  - computers, phone, TVs and start with one device. Make sure that device has no virus, malware etc, and check the network monitor on it to see if it matches your speedtest. That should tell you if that device is also using the connection in the background.

and turn wifi off while you do this, and make sure the one device is connected via ethernet

All your stats are showing (which has been mentioned numerous times previous) is that the likely cause of your problem is upstream saturation.

If you want to fix your problem you'll need to find out what and who is doing this.
