Very slow page load times

Over the last few months, it seems that pages are becoming slower and slower to load. For example, TradeMe used to load almost instantly, now it takes a couple of seconds. Overseas sites are positively glacial at times - it can take 10 seconds or more to load some in the UK, such as eBay.co.uk.

Download speeds are fine, and I can stream HD video using iPlayer, so am not sure what's going on. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Speedtest results are fine - we are on VDSL.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Are you using any proxy or alternative DNS Servers which are assigned via your ISP?

That is a good connection. Have you tried different browsers, and different devices?

Not that I know of, but having problems finding out which DNS server the router is using.

Looked through the router log (there must be an easier way!) - they are the standard Orcon servers, 121.98.0.1 and 121.98.0.2.

Yes, the PC I'm using seems the quickest. I normally use Chrome and used IE to load a UK website - it was slower than Chrome, probably because nothing was cached.

try assigning the pc, Googles DNS addresses and see if that makes a difference, at least it will rule out the orcon ones

yeah I'm getting some odd behaviour tonight (pages not loading, etc) using Orcon's DNS servers, swtiching to Google DNS solves my issues

I've spent an interesting half hour or so playing with DNS Benchmark. The fastest DNS server is the router, which appears to do some serious caching. Next fastest was the Vodafone server closely followed by Orcon.

But I'll try another DNS server just in case it does make any difference. The next fastest was Pacific Internet in Oz. Google's servers are slow.

If it was Orcon's DNS then thousands of us would be having problems.

I'd suggest you should be looking at your computer for add-ons and adware etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think that's the problem. I've checked the extensions in Chrome, and I also have a clean IE without 3rd party add-ons, which performs just the same.

I'm using the Vodafone DNS server this morning and no problems yet. Will see what happens today.

If you are on Orcon you should not use another ISP's DNS - some ISPs have their own local caches with specific addresses that aren't accessible from outside their network.

Some ISPs also block access to their DNS from external networks.

I ran DNS Benchmark and the Vodafone server was fine. It also seems to be about the only open DNS server left in NZ!

I'm just trying it to see if it makes any difference, no problems so far.
