As a former Orcon subscriber I still use their email account for disposable stuff when I don't want to expose my real email address. Now I have just received a notice about changes they are making, and there is a clause that says non-subscribers MAY incur a charge for email accounts. I hate this kind of waffle. Does it mean they are going to charge or not, and if they only MAY do so, under what circumstances? Can anyone provide more information about this? The account is handy to have but I will gladly give it up if it is going to cost. If that is the case I would like to know about it before I start receiving invoices. For that matter, how do I even cancel a free email account? I have no idea. Does anyone know more about this?

Was it advertised as 'free for life' when you signed up?  AFAIK it always has been so they can't start charging you for it - EVER

The most they can do is remove the 'free for life' clause for all NEW customers.

you could always point them to this thread:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=93208

and a direct quote from Orcon at the end of the thread

"Orcon email addresses are indeed - free for life. Even if you don't have any internet services with us, your @orcon.net.nz email account will remain active for as long as you want it at no charge."

(this is why businesses should never make categorical promises that they will NEVER do something, or ALWAYS do something  without including some form of caveat. It can come back to bite them later on)

The actual email does end with "
We hope that with these changes we can continue to offer you a reliable and great value free email service with your Orcon account." so I'm not too worried.
