After being able to get Fibre for a couple of years (and then Gigatown), I am finally able to sign up for the service.
After asking lots of questions, and then presenting the options, differences etc to my parents (who owned the house, even though I pay for the internet) - I was always blocked because Mum never understood the technology change.

Sadly, the ability to get Fibre installed has come with a massive blow to life - sadly Mum died a week ago

Dude.

That sucks the big one.  I'm lucky enbough to have both my folks and my inlaws (who I like better!).  I'm guessing that it doesn't matter whether you are 5 or 55 year old - losing a parent is a real kicker.

Perhaps the UFB can be used to upload a YouTube tribute to her for the rellies to have a look at.

When I couldn't get Fibre, it was all I wanted
Now that I can get it, I haven't done anything about it.

Funny how that works.

Sorry to hear that - never an easy thing to face.

My Mum was the same when I lived at home, except back then it was dial up vs ADSL...

No new wiring was required for the upgrade - just a new modem and a jackpoint filter.
... and you got your phone back when you were surfing.

If only getting fibre was so simple ... wink

Sorry to hear that.

You sound quite young.

My dad passed away a couple of years ago and I went and bought some beer a couple of hours after (not to drown my sorrows but people were visiting and didn't have any)   ....  the store attendant asked if I was having a good day.......  That sticks in my mind whenever I hear that phrase now.

Seeing as it has been a week since I ordered Fibre, I gave Snap a call to see if there is anything I need to know
i.e. who contacts me so I can be home for the scope and then install

Scope is scheduled for Saturday (which seems odd, but works) but I was told I didn't need to be there for this.
I thought the scope was the part I needed to be there for - so I could make sure that their plan didn't involve digging up parts of the garden we didn't want them to dig up.
According to the Chorus website, this is the Agree part of the install: https://www.chorus.co.nz/installing-fibre/fibre-in-your-home-or-business/ufb-installation-easy-as-abc

You should be there so you can tell them where you want things to go, otherwise they will likely install them in the cheapest/quickest place possible and it is likely to be in an inconvient position. The property owner does also need to agree to how it is being installed, if the property owner doesn't agree, then they don't have to sign the contract..

Chorus did call me today, letting me know the scope will take place 8am-12pm on 13/6 and for someone to be there.
Also moved the install date from 26/6 to 2/7 in the afternoon as I wasn't going to be around.

Chorus was around bright and early on Saturday, because we do not have underfloor or ceiling access in the house it was not possible for us to have the ONT in the desired location but we came to a hopefully possible solution
Sometime before the install date, someone is going to make sure that the pipe carrying the cable from the street will actually work to carry the fibre.

Was in Christchurch Thursday-Saturday and on returning home noticed that sticking out of the current "Telecom box" on the outside of the house were some new cables.
I guess they decided to pull the fibre through the existing cable pipe early.

If it works like my install, that means they will have now scheduled the inside install and it should be in a day or two.  I suggest you call Snap to check.

Had my fibre installed today

Received a call from Chorus at 8.20am asking if anyone would be home in 20-30 minutes. As the schedule was for 1pm, I advised that I had taken 12-5pm off work to be home at 1pm and couldn't get there any earlier. That was no issue it seemed - the Chorus person advised they would move onto other jobs.

At exactly 1pm, three vans turned up.
Two hours later I was connected to fibre.

After a quick call to Snap (Ethernet)

Plan: Gigatown

Very impressed with Chorus, and Snap

Now to move my computer back to its home and see how the WiFi signal I now live off handles the connection

EDIT: Can't get the Speedtest results to show

Astonishing!
I hope that I get that lucky in late 2019 when we get fibre smile
