all day today i have been doing everything i can to speed up my network or find issues causing bad ping.

now i live directly across the street from my cabinet i can see it from my seat during the day. now my brother lives about 5 minutes away from me and his cabinet is about a block away from his house yet on speedtest.net he gets around 20-25ms ping yet im stuck with around 45-50 his house is much older than mine so im kinda stuck on what could be causing such a bad ping i have had the old alarm removed but barely made a change 2-4ms of ping at best. we both have unlimited vdsl with phone line through orcon and have our network setup almost identically. both mine and my brothers PCs are wired just to make sure the tests were consistent

the only thing that seems odd to me is the spike in ping against my own modem which i know should not be that high

any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to ring orcon with a problem if i can resolve it myself

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Living directly opposite a cabinet means absolutely nothing - you have no idea how the MPF routes to your house, and there is a pretty high chance that it won't be direct.

Anyway ping isn't really related to distance from the cabinet except for INP & interleaving occuring on less stable lines, but without a lot more stats what you've posted above is pretty meaningless. Where exactly are you pinging to for example?

High erratic pings to your ruter indicate you're probably testing over WiFi and saturating the interface at the time.

if you are running something like INSSIDER at the same time is can affect the ping and make it somewhat erratic
