I have been with MR since January 2015 on an unlimited 100/20 plan in Christchurch.

Download speeds had consistently been around 95Mbs until about late June 2015, when they increased to 105Mbs. I was getting these speeds at all times of the day.

In the last few weeks I have noticed that the download speeds seem to be dropping off in the evenings. They are still good at other times.

I have just done some download tests with Speedtest.net to MR and Spark servers. All speeds shown in Mbs.

MR  27.24, 101.59, 102.82.

Spark  103.47, 26.12, 64.58.

MR  99.02, 44.51, 54.36.

Spark  38.14, 38.66, 61.00.

Upload speeds were all in the range from 21.04 - 21.52.

I assume this evening speed drop off is the problem that has been reported on GZ from Truenet results.

I have been happy with MR, but if this continues I will probably have to look at shifting to another ISP.

Has MR got any plans to address this problem in the near future.

MR speeds have been discussed in a few other threads where their poor Truenet results have also been mentioned.

It would seem their results are poor for a couple of reasons - their lack of peering (meaning some traffic goes to Auckland, or even Sydney) before coming back to NZ, and many of their POP's may only have 1Gbps connections.

As to whether these issues will ever be changed, only MR would be able to answer that.

Hi There,

We are currently working with Enable to resolve the congestion issue that effects our customers at peak times.

There will be a new handover that we are migrating customers to, this will be able to handle our growing number of customers and It will be implemented and resolved on Tuesday night, 31 May.

Excuse my ignorance of such things, but would this apply to all NZ customers or is it a specific Christchurch / Enable handover thing ?

The Enable Handover upgrade is locked in and we'll be migrating 50% of our customers from the old Handover to the New Handover early morning Friday.

Sorry for the delay, there was a last minute change in design/migration plan on Enable's end.

Thanks,

Hi, thanks for the reply, however I was refering to the UFF / Vocus handover upgrade in Hamilton, not the enable one in Christchurch.

I was advised the Hamilton upgrade would be in 3 weeks about 3 weeks ago, so just thought I'd jump in and ask the question

Thanks

I have just repeated the download tests with Speedtest.net to MR and Spark servers. All speeds shown in Mbs.

MR  104.94, 105.12, 105.07

Spark  105.01, 104.89, 104.95

MR  105.03, 105.02, 105.04, 105.15

Spark  105.01, 104.93, 104.90, 105.20

Speeds are much more consistent than last Sunday evening. Early days, but maybe the updates done by MR and Enable are working.

Skype to daughter at Dunedin University on Thursday evening last week was ABSOLUTELY ABYSMAL! Frequent video and sound dropouts and even disconnections. Hopefully this week will not have these issues. WAF was below zero.

Also did some tests to other servers with very mixed results;

2degrees  12.46, 8.34

Woosh  105.21

Worldnet  79.16

Callplus  6.69, 6.94

Vodafone  8.09

All servers were in Auckland, and upload speeds were ALL above 20Mbs to every server.

Update on evening speed drops.

https://obsproject.com/

Timed how long it took to download the 100MB file listed above to see what evening international download speed was compared to during the day.

Friday July 29 8pm.  2mins 20 seconds.

Saturday July 30 3pm. 38 seconds.

Conclusion seems to be that MR still have a problem in the evening???

Some evenings recently I have noticed our MyRepublic connection slowing down dramatically. Even a 2 minute YouTube video buffered the other evening on our 100/20 fibre connection. A 75mb file from the site you linked took 7 mins 10 seconds to download at 6pm tonight, running at about 1.5Mb/s (on WiFi sitting next to the router). BigPipe is actually really looking quite tempting now.

Just downloaded the file again at 8.20pm. Took 3mins 11seconds. Worse than same time last night!

I looked at Bigpipe but they don't offer phone, so would have to get that from someone else. Prefer a one stop shop for fibre and phone, but if MR don't sort this out I may have to have another look.
