Introducing NZ’s first unlimited* mobile data plan…

Market disruptor 2degrees has today launched NZ’s first unlimited* mobile data plan.

In a move that will ‘test the waters’ of the current market, 2degrees is offering customers unlimited* mobile data, calling and text for $129 per month.

Chief Marketing Officer Roy Ong says while this is a big step for the fast growing telco it’s also what customers have been asking for.

“Kiwis are increasingly data hungry, they’re consistently telling us they want and need more data so we’re going to test the waters with this new plan.

“2degrees has a proud history of being an innovator and challenger, we introduced the first unlimited voice plan in 2010, we believe in leading the way and trying new things with our customers.”

Ong stresses that the new plan is at this point for a limited time only.

“We’re being really up front about the fact that this is a bit of a trial for us and the market.  It has to work for customers but it also has to be economic – if it doesn’t stack up on either of those aspects we will rethink continuing to offer it.”

Fair use policy, so not actually unlimited?
Where would the t&cs be found, looks interesting.

Can't see how an unlimited data mobile plan could possibly be offered in New Zealand without this disclaimer, at least in the next five years. Otherwise tech savvy customers will immediately cancel their $80 home broadband plans and start blowing through 300GB a month of mobile data.

They should be okay they have not specified a soft data cap or anything like that.

Other carriers I am sure will follow sooner rather than later but nice move, I would be worried about how other customers on 2D will be impacted due to the amount of spectrum they have compared to Spark / VodafoneNZ

Fair usage, can't hotspot or teather.

technically they could do the same move some European RSP's do, requiring a mangle to hotspot due to TTL

Can 2degrees modify the carrier bundle for iOS just for these customers to remove the option of mobile hotspot?

What business user doesn't need to use a hotspot from time to time?

Seriously.  If they even can monitor hotspot usage, put a limit on how much data can be used on hotspot - don't ban it.

Questions I have:

1) What constitutes an eligible Mobile Phone only?

2) How can they tell whether you're tethering?

3) What constitutes "Fair Use" given that nothing is mentioned on their website when I click on 'terms apply' link.

Using the word unlimited means it's unlimited you can't hide behind a fair use policy
