NZ Communications is now listed on the Telstra website as a mobile roaming partner for Australian users visiting New Zealand. And their prices are cheaper than those offered by Vodafone New Zealand (is anyone surprised?):

Those are the rates Telstra charges fo Telstra customers roaming in NZ on Vodafone NZ, not the price Vodafone NZ charges for service here or for the price Vodafone NZ charges for roaming.

In fact, looking at your chart, Telstra customers roaming in NZ on the new entrant in the market are only able to use GSM voice and TXT, will pay less ONLY for the calls home to Australia, which presumably incur termination charges from ... Telstra Australia, and will pay exactly the same for those components they can do (GSM voice and TXT not video calling, 3G etc).

When in fact the prices are all the same except for one and that's one that Telstra Australia controls completely.

Vodafone's rates vary depending on what plan you're on. So on Super PrePay you pay:

Just 89 cents a minute to any number in New Zealand or 15 other countries, anytime.
Talk for $2 for up to two hours to any Vodafone mobile, 7pm to 7am weeknights and all weekend.
Incredible value Add-Ons like BestMates, Free Weekends and TXT2000

and if you're a Vodafone customer roaming in Australia you pay the same rate you would pay for the service in NZ. So, if you pay 89c/minute for a local call in NZ, you pay 89c/minute for a local call in Aus.

So you could just as easily have said Vodafone customers roaming in Australia get a better deal than Telstra customers roaming in NZ on Vodafone. Or you could have said Vodafone customers roaming in Aus get a better deal than Telstra customers roaming in NZ on NZ Comms.

Why do vodafone nz charge more for roaming termination than what vodafone au charge vodafone nz? Vodafone au cant offer the same rates for roaming in nz because vodafone nz charge them too much!

While prepaid is an option due to high roaming charges, I think the point of the post was that its been identified that Vodafone NZ charge more for roaming than NZ Communications do.

When you look at it, $3.70 per minute vs $1.79 - there is a massive difference. While its true that Telstra set the prices for their customers, its almost certainly affected by the prices that their roaming provider (in this case) vodafone charges, otherwise why aren't the NZ communication prices also at $3.70?

I have my source who is not in nz but certainly very well placed .. It is not publically disclosed information.

IMHO Vodafone are bad when it comes to roaming. End of story. 3 pioneered the perfect roaming product and it is a shame vodafone put large profits well ahead of delivering their customers fantastic global solutions.

So I've just shown you that Vodafone NZ roaming is far cheaper than Telstra Australia's roaming ... and still you want something else?

We have the cheapest roaming in NZ for the largest roaming customer base. We roam with On Account. We roam with Prepay. All our handsets can roam internationally.

If you can demonstrate your case I'm happy to debate it, but so far we've got "Telstra's giving a better deal to NZ Comms than to Vodafone NZ ROFL" and "Vodafone is bad" with no substantiation.

We have a good roaming proposition. Customers like it. What else is there?

Mauricio, you started this thread by calling it: "Telstra roaming prices in NZ: NZ Comms cheaper than Vodafone" which is misleading. Prices plural, which is not true.

I have replied that in fact all the prices are the same bar one, and Steve then complained about Vodafone's pricing. I have responded to that. It's all on topic and quite straight forward.

That's what I call a fantastic roaming proposition. Imagine how great it would be if Vodafone could offer their customers a deal like that!

That is a very good plan, I agree. Where I think we disagree is that you think Vodafone NZ's existing roaming offer is somehow unacceptable whereas I think it's a great offer. I, of course, am paid to say that. Our customers, on the other hand, are not and they also tell us what a good offer it is by using it extensively.

We've simplified into zones: any network in that zone will be charged at the same rate. Our customers like that.

I can see that customers would like this too but there's nothing wrong with the plan we're offering and frankly it's better than the other roaming offers from NZ operators.

Perhaps you should check your competitors rates and promotions once in a while... one interesting area is blackberry data roaming...

As a sidenote - if all VF op-co's report back to Global why is there no global standard for roaming on VF networks? What happened to Passport?

It seems the point of the original post is that its cheaper for an Aussie roamer to jump on NZC rather than Voda NZ.

Either Telstra is adding a premium for Calls back to Australia via VFNZ, or VFNZ is charging more (or both). It seems more likely that the charge is high seeing as VFAUs NZ roaming rates are similar to Telstras, but without sensitive info I guess we won't know.

Correct me if i'm wrong MF, but I don't think you were referring to outgoing roaming, just incoming, the point being that people were expecting NZC to offer lower roaming termination rates to gain roaming revenue seeing as VF has had such a free reign on GSM inbound roaming, and it appears as if they are,

mushion22 and mikal are correct. The intention of the original post was to show:

1. NZ Communications is alive and closing deals with international partners

2. An Australian visitor that happens to be a Telstra customer will get better rates if roaming on NZ Connections that if using Vodafone New Zealand.

Paul, I don't see why you are comparing the prices of your outbound roaming plans with this.

So back to NZ Communications...
