Just spotted these 2 tweets from 2degrees:

I believe the RCG sites are built in this fashion already?

My interpretation of this is the opportunity for Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees to run a single Cell Tower instead of a cluster of 3 located close to each other but happy for anyone with insight to explain how this will really work

I don't really get what they mean? As far as I know, my Spark mobile stays on Spark towers every where I go? And I get coverage to all the places I visit frequently.

@chevrolux If your handset is attached to an RCG site you are on a shared RAN between all 3 carriers, You would not even know if you are attached to an RCG site as it just works

If the deal is with Vodafone then its good news for them too as they still have big pockets of 3G only coverage, example between Bulls and Waiouru on SH1

Is the deal with Vodafone or with Spark? I hope it’s with both especially with Spark.

Spark has a lot of 700mhz 4g coverage.

@Dochart Of course it will be with VodafoneNZ and this will see them sharing spectrum as well

900Mhz 4G / LTE is growing as well across NZ

I still reckon Spark has the best coverage in NZ. Both 2degrees and Vodafone don’t have much 700mhz 4g spectrum whereas Spark has 700mhz 4g coverage in almost every cell tower.

@Dochart say what? Spark has 20Mhz and VodafoneNZ 15Mhz and I think 2degrees has 10Mhz of 700Mhz

VodafoneNZ is deploying 700 and 2100Mhz 4G very fast at the moment

To explain more (pretty sure this is the easiest way?)...

Think - extra company, not a specific telco throwing up poles. With all providers antennas/spectrums/APN/IDs on it. And playing toy-pit mediator.

So not just 1 provider putting up a pole and needing co-share agreements or risking customers until a competitor can be bothered to stick one up beside it due cost and so on.

There's one gone in near our village to bridge the gap between 2 residential areas.

If you look on https://gis.geek.nz/map/celltowers you find almost every Spark cell tower having 700mhz 4g coverage compared to 2degrees and Vodafone where they don’t have a lot.

Just an FYI

RCG are utilising 4G MOCN for the majority of their sites.

Multiple PLMN's on the same carrier(s).

On the new RCG (Rural Connectivity Group) towers, all 3 providers own a third of each site and use the same hardware eg. antenna, tower etc as the competitors. This is basically treated as a network provided tower by a handset and hands over seamlessly like any other tower on that network.

Someone correct me if I am wrong :)
