Hey there

I have just moved to newtown and just wondering if anybody's using orcon in the area. I would like to find out what the speed is like. (i am a fair distance from the exchange, along constable st.) Can anybody help please?

It looks that ADSL2+ is setup in your area so you will get the best speeds but it will be going through telecoms network.

Thanks for that Dion. It seems to be the case on the telecom wholesale checker. Though the problem is that I talked to the salesperson at Orcon and he told me that I don't have adsl2 for some reason. Hence the question actually... Is there some one in the area already with orcon?

Another option if you don't mind spending a bit more would be cable from Telstra

Ah yes...apparently everybody around my new place is on telstraclear. Nonetheless the one-hour-and-a-half waiting time for their customer service really really gets on my nerves...and of course so much more expensive for 50G. :p

How do you work out that it's more expensive for 50GB on TCL than Orcon?

If you don't want a phoneline TCL is cheaper since you'll only be paying ~$125 for 50GB. With a phoneline TCL is also slightly cheaper but you don't get unlimited calling.

mmm orcon 50G + phoneline = 84.95 + 35 = 129.95
TCL cable 40G + phoneline = 146.90 + 10G at 14.75 = 161.65.

Well mmm I might be exaggerating a bit when I say much. But it's still 30 smackers more.

What Orcon plan gives you 50GB for $84.95?

torin: purple & calling + 50G

I still don't see how it costs $84.95

Purple with calling is $34.95 per month with 1GB of data.

Another 49GB of data is going to cost you an additional $98 at $2 per GB.

That's now $132.95 and you've still got to add your phoneline rental onto that.

orcon 50G + phoneline = 84.95 + 35 = 129.95

is correct, as he is buying a data bundle rather than using the casual data rate.

Thanks Sounddude. That is precisely the case.

Nonetheless we are straying a bit far away from the topic here. Is there anyone who can verify the speed of orcon in newtown? or whether ADSL2 is available?

Orcon have only unbundled Courtenay Place exchange, which might serve Newtown. Odds are good you'll be on a Telecom wholesale based plan (UBS or UBA), shame they won't confirm for you.

TCL on the other hand is a bit more of a certainty on what you'll get.

Throw your phone number into the Orcon front page. It will tell you if you are Orcon+ or Orcon.

if you are on Orcon, throw your address into www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps. It should say if your ADSL2+ or not.
