Apologies if this has already been discussed a lot.

We are moving house and need to change ISP (currently on cable). I'd like to use slingshot plus italk and not have a normal phone line (same system I am using now on cable). Slingshot told me I have to have a normal phone line first before they can provide me with naked ADSL.
There is a phone line where we are moving to but the current owner of that house will of course cancel that when he is moving.
It seems a chicken and egg thing where they suggested I have to pay for a Telecom line first and and then that would be canceled so I can get naked ADLS with them. That seems a complete waste of money to me and not a good way to attract customers.

Have I been missing somehting or just misinformed?  Sorry for my ignorance but I have been on cable for years now with no major issues.

thanks for your help

Unfortunately, i think this is the case.

I had a similar issue when i moved house, i couldn't sign up to NBT plan without having an active line first... had to pay to get a UBS line connected, then Slingshot moved me to their NBT plan (which is a resell of Vodafone's Red Network).

Really sucks...

I had the same problem so I went with Xnet. I have now just changed to Slingshot - six months after setting up with Xnet. Infact Tommorow I will email Slingshot about this issue as they missed having me a customer for six months.

I am debating on weather to change to SlingShot nDSL plan after reading this post.

I am currently on Xnet torrent plan nDSL, if I want to join Slingshot nDSL do I have to pay Telecom a connection fee and then a disconnection fee just so I can change to slingshot? cant slingshot just find me in the exchange where my xnet is connected??

Sounds a little stupid if you ask me.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense why they can't do that. I haven't seen an explanation of why this is.

But hey, XNet iwll let you sign up without an active POTS line :)

It is explained in this thread
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=57319&forumid=81&page_no=2

Pity that they still havent sorted it they must be loosing a few customers for it. I persevered and went thru telecom first but it was just ridiculous to have to do that.

Id imagine if you get a good CSR/supervisor they might be able to able to sort you out.

Just 1 month line rental so with reconnection fee it was $80ish all up.

Sooo ridiculous, but thankfully slingshot have been excellent once I was setup.

They dont need the phone line to be working, just to be there waiting for a connection. In fact, they cant order naked DSL until the phone line is cancelled anyway, but they do need to identify the particular phone line. If there is a working/previous phone number they can put naked DSL on the same line. If they just give Telecom the house address after the phone is cancelled, then Telecom have to guess which phone wires are actually connected to accessible jackpoints.

You might also want to disconnect wiring from the un-used phone jackpoints and plug in your ADSL modem directly to the master jackpoint, then you can run Ethernet cables out to wherever you need or plug in the FXS on your phone converter to the other jackpoints.

Time to find a new industry!

BTW: italk has dodgy overseas connectivity sometimes so its worth having a normal phone line anyway, just for a backup. I also presume you do have a UPS to provide battery backup for your ADSL modem and voice equipment, its worth it.

Hi all!

Great news...we're now able to sign up new customers who don't currently have an active line at their address!

Please note that this applies to Homeline & Broadband plans only --- currently we can't sign you up  to Naked DSL or Next Big Thing immediately. But you can sign up for a broadband plan, then amend your plan to Naked or NBT afterwards. So it does involve an extra step....but it's definitely an improvement, and we're working on a fix to allow new customers without an active line to sign up directly to Naked or NBT.

It's not available on our online sign-up form just yet, so please give us a call on 0800 89 2000 and ask for a 'New Connection' :)

Thank you for your feedback - this thread was instrumental in having the new process implemented. Please keep your feedback coming!

Thanks,
Nikki (brand manager)

Will changing to a NDSL plan equate to a disconnection for tolls and regular DSL (and thus two contract termination fees?)
