Frostwire was working no problems last night, now its not working at all, neither eMule, and no i dont use these programs for copyright infringement, they are used for other legitimate purposes.

I had ports opened for both programsand were working, but today nothing works, have double and triple checked router, rebooted router, still the same issue, checked ports etc...  Telnetting in from a remote location, the ports seem to be open.  So im assuming Orcon is detecting traffic distintive to these two programs and blocking the packets from going thru, hence the ports appear to be open but frostwire/emule dont work, and obviously changing ports will not work.

Can someone from Orcon confirm this?

If this is the case, I am going else where because ive had enough.  Already had problems with orcon in the past restricting access to various websites like rapidshare.  I was trying to download a specialised driver for a computer I was working on, (someone had post it for me) could not get any better than 6 or 7kb/s with download timming out every 5mins, eventually had to use neighbours telecom connection to grab the file.  I wasmost appauled, and a cust service rep at Orcon actually admitted they were restricting rapidshare.

Not good :(

edit:  Tried xtra dialup and both these programs work no problems, so why Orcon? and dont say its my router/port forwarding because its not

These programs should also work in firewalled mode with no port forwarding set up but they dont even do that

Xtra dial up and Orcon broadband are different things - are you sure you have all the configuration required on your router?

Last time I asked Orcon about these things I was told they don't block any ports.

going to try different modems just to make sure, one i'll try is an internal adsl pci card so will get a direct connection, internet ip assigned directly to pc. Pci card should work with windows firewall disabled atleast.

still a no go, ip assigned directly to pc using adsl pci card. if its not Orcon blocking frostwire/emule packets then it must be some sort of network glitch. will try again in morning. I hope I dont have to jump ship, I pay a premium $2/mb to orcon for over usage and I expect to be able to use file sharing software, I dont leave pc on 24/7 leeching hundreds of gb like other people do on unlimited plans, I only use it once in a while when I am looking for certain files, mainly drivers/older programs/iso's of ms install media etc... Most recently I downloaded an untouched Vista OEM install iso with SP2 integrated for the sole purpose of rebuilding machines with an oem licence sticker attached to the side.

A few months ago I hit similar issues with torrent files, during th evening they would run extremely slowly or not at all, left it running overnight and it picked up speed later at night. Happened for a few nights running then the issue appeared to vanish..... its Orcons bandwidth management from what I got told, some nights theres heavier use than normal so they throttle some traffic to allow other traffic to move smoothly (or something along those lines). There is a thread on here somewhere about it....

Being school holidays, Im not surprised its kicking in a bit more at the moment - soon as the holidays are over youll probably find everything runs fine again.

Thats exactly what happening to me, I gave up the other night and in morning it was fine no problems.  Now im trying again and nothing at all is connecting, tried bittorrent out of interest, it gets the peer list but has a lot of trouble connecting.  Now im on a mates telecom connection with my laptop and working fine, I remoted back into my pc at home on orcon and everything is a no go, emule wont connect, frostwire wont connect, and so on...  its a bit off realy that orcon do this, telecom obviously dont.

I might as well jump ship, at $2 per Gb I expect unrestricted access from Orcon, Slingshot are charging $50/50Gb which can be purchased anytime and carries over month after month, upto 12 months.  Works out cheaper than orcon in the long run.  I dont mind being throttled on these p2p apps but blocking them outright during peak times is not on and thats what Orcon appears to be doing in my view as I can not connect on emule or frostwire, not untill after 11.30pm approx.

Can someone from Orcon please contact me on my mobile tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss this or I am just going to change to slingshot, orcon username is geekzone username.

Youll find it eventually stop happening and everything will be back to normal again - I havent had it occur again since I posted in about it on GZ a while back.

Wish I could find that post.... will do a further search and pull it up for you.

Thanks for the link, Orcon have a bit to lose if I jump ship, its not just broadband I have with them. Hopefully they sort it out.

Sort what out though ? They shape traffic occasionally... every ISP does it to an extent. Its not a fault.

As I said before, you'll probably find itll go away again soon. Mine lasted about a week.... havent had it again since.

I dont mind them traffic shaping during peak times, thats understandable, but blocking it outright is what they appear to be doing.  I run a business from home and have been overloaded with work the past week.  Im sitting here right now trying to download a linux distro to go on a customers computer.  Its a 4gb iso and with http downloading I get approx 200kb/s single thread, I tried the torrent instead in the hope of a better speed and nothing will connect.  Whats more as soon as I tried to download the torrent, the whole website became dead (well apeared to be dead) after clicking on the torrent link, all other sites worked.
http://software.opensuse.org/113/en

For now im downloading multi thread over http from an australian mirror, getting about the same speed I would on bittorrent, but I would rather use bittorrent.  This file is also costing me $8 at $2 per Gb.

Orcon put out so much hype about how good they are, no contracts, no offshore call centres, fast speeds etc...  But they fail to mention that all p2p protocols are blocked during peak times.  I am going to call Orcon on Monday re this issue as it is affecting my business.    Never used to have problems like this, and have also been refering customers to Orcon, I will no longer be doing this.  This is beyond a joke honestly, Orcon needs to change the way they do things.  Will definately be changing if Orcon continues to block p2p.
