Hey everyone,

I have been upgrading our network over the past year, starting with a wireless router and recently upgrading my laptop's wireless from G to N. However, the speeds I am getting are just not up to par. This is speedtest.net's results:

-Download: 0.65mb/s
-Upload: 0.74mb/s
-Ping: 10ms
-Auckland Sever
-Time: 6:30PM
-Test conducted with wired Ethernet connection

My ISP is Orcon and I have one of the "+" plans. I also live in Epsom, Auckland (so not rural!).

One thing that did pop up was that my modem is a 5(or 6) year old, Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem.

1. Could the modem be slowing things down?
2. Is something else slowing it down?
3. What are Orcon' standard speeds?

Any help would be appreciated, I don't think I can stand having to wait for a 2min 360p video to load!!!

Can you list what the DSL line stats are for the modem? (The speed it lists as connecting at etc.)

Sorry, I'm not faniliar with your particular modem, however most have a web admin page you can log on to, and somewhere in the menus you are looking for things like ADSL sync rate, noise margin and attenuation.

Also, try the speed tests connect to the modem with a cable, not wireless.

You mean directly to the modem, not through the router?

You cant get the whole lot of stats out of the 632 without putting it in debug mode and telnetting into it. I have replaced mine with an 834g so I can tweek the noise margin so cant give the exact commands to telnet with, but the debug command is

http://10.20.0.1/cgi-bin/webcm?todo=debug

except change the IP to what yours is on.

Then telnet to it and I think it was

cat /proc/avalance/avsar_modem_stats or similar

I am having a problem with accessing the modem, it requires a username and password. I have an idea of the pass word but I can't think of the username, does anyone know where they come from?

In the meantime,
does anyone think ADSL2+ will make a difference?

Er, connected to whatever router you have, with a cable. Does that help at all?

Do you get the same speed over wireless that you get with it wired? (disable wireless)

Also try the speed tests at different times of the day, it could be that your local exchange/cabinet/backhaul is getting hammered.

You're not even getting ADSL1 speeds there, let alone ADSL2

The local exchange could be a problem, also, what do you mean about ADSL 1 speeds over here?

The speeds over wireless aren't much of an improvement, even less.

Oh, missed that you already doing it over a wired connection, sorry.

You should be able to get ADSL1 speeds up to ~7-8mbit, depending on your line. Is the exchange you're on ADSL2+ enabled?

Have you done an isolation test? (Remove everything connected to the phone line but the DSL modem)

The line stats would be most helpful in determining your problem, though.

Basically, the download speed you are seeing is only about 10% of the maximum that is possible with ADSL (1) so ADSL2+ would not be any better.

Until we see the actual line / connection stats, we are just guessing as to what the problem is. There are several common things that go wrong - internal house wiring, incorrect setup, congestion at various points along the way etc. But without the modem stats, we can't narrow down where your problem is.
