I'm trying to use my Motorola V3r as a modem (via Bluetooth) to allow my Windows 7 based PC to access the internet.

I have set up a dial up connection calling *99# with login/pw set to 2degrees/internet

The usual response is an error 628. Having looked this up on the internet I've tried changing baud rate but to no avail. What's worse, I think it worked when I first tried but certainly not now. Now I even suspect my own memory on this.

I have looked at the device drivers and looked at the diagnostics and the following is a typical log ....

My own humble interpretation based on the section I've highlighted is that I'm connecting to something that answers on *99# but there is no subsequent traffic between my computer and that answering.

Any help would be welcome.

I am real hazy on Hayes commands, looking there you get a connection at 56k - and the carrier was dropped by the other end.
As well as Baud rate you also need parity and stop bit to match at the other end e.g "8 None and 1".
Anyone else???

There's no username or password on the APN. Why are you using those?

I've tried with and without username/password. I tried them as a result of googling for an answer. There are a number of references to using *99# & 2wireless/internet to use a vodem (example http://nzgeek.org/topic/29800/2-degrees-vodem) I know I don't have a vodem but I thought it was worth a try.

Is there, perhaps, an alternate number to dial rather than *99#? I'm clutching at straws here.

I think the highlighted part of your text is associated with just the connection from your computer to your phone, and not your phone to 2degrees.

Have you tried *99***1# instead yet?

It does appear that way although there is some additional logging in there too. Without seeing a good log I don't know if there is something missing in the 5 seconds between the CONNECT response and the hang up.

I have now. I get the same results.

However, I have now had success. I called 2degrees and they said I had to make sure my APN was set to internet mentioning the word 'tethering'. There was a setting called GPRS APN on my webaccess settings but changing that didn't work. Back to googling I found a page describing how to tether the phone to a cingular network (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cingular_Wireless_FAQ/MEdia_Configuration#HSDPA_Handset_Configuration)

I adapted the advice given on that page and used the following additional initialization command :

AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP", "internet"

Now I'm in business. A bit of guesswork really but sometimes that's what it takes.
