Just looking at it, there is nothing there that a VOIP router and a cordless phone plugged into it provide.

There is no skype connectivity on the device, just orcons PSTN offering. So really after shelling out on this device you are no better off really since international calls will still cost you etc.

No mention of multiple numbers for multiple handsets. As all the devices are in one, you are again restricted with positioning of the device to get coverage thruout the property.

I just don't see this as a particularly amazing device worthy of being called genius.

I dont get the big deal and why everyone is thinking that it is awesome - xnet have done naked and voip and a integrated router with provisioning forever now on fusion.

Its not aimed at "geeks", its taking the VOIP setup side of things away from standard consumers, thats all. Id rather tell my folks how to plug this in rather than a setup via Xnet.

Personally Im keen on seeing the overall plans etc for this, as I need to lower my phone/net costs by at least $20 a month to keep the bill hounds happy :)

The units themselves have impressed me so far, we have the BobLite here at the moment on our test bench line, and its given us a full ADSL2 connection rate, 24mbps vs the 17mbps the Linksys was giving. The "Genius" is the Bob2 model if the image in the Herald story is accurate.

It's not really aimed at geeks, more at the punters with no technical inclination or interest... it's for the grannies and the people we end up supporting.

I'm keen to find out a bit more about pricing. No need for us to pay per call if it's VOIP.

Yes, true, but if I wasnt a geek and you started telling me I had to buy a pre-configured/XNet certified ATA or VOIP capable router to use VOIP on Xnet, and Orcon just said "here, this is all you need in one package", I know who Id choose.

I think that's the entire cost, ie $70 gets you DSL + the genuis thing. (Which sounds like a fancy VOIP box).

So it's basically Naked DSL + a fancy VOIP box, from the sounds of it. Their plan is to do away with the $50 POTS line and give you a decent VOIP line over naked DSL instead.

with majority of internet packages on 5GB or less per month, $70 suit those perfectly.. good audience targeting

POTS lines are only $50 if you have no services on them, most people have a few of them so its closer to $65 they pay.

It will be interesting to see what Orcon's calling plans are like once this device is officially released next week. WxC have stuck doggedly to 28c or 30c per minute Fixed-to-Mobile rate, which seems exorbitant given that they are only paying 14c I think it was to the MNOs since the ComCom regulated termination rates back in May. Even 2Talk are still at 24c no nothing has changed there at all really.

If Orcon were to take the axe to their call pricing, they could capture a good slice of the market with a product like this.

Yep totally new idea running a All in one wireless and VoIP router to make calls over the Net...hmmm if only WXC, Callplus and 2talk had perhaps thought of something like this back in say 2006 ...

Just a bit of marketing and good on them for this But a bit far fetched to say this is new... The hardware is the Bob boxes which is a a home hub with a dect unit that's the only difference to all the other VoIP routers on the market.

Only benifit I can see with the dect inbuilt to the ATA is like with the vodafone one that is integrated - no massive delays from dial to connecting as it uses DTMF to dial.

There is no issue of GSM interference like happened with the old white vodafone box that they replaced with the dect one.

If this helps stop the ever going upwards trend of landlines, then good, but I would be more expectant that the telecom seperation will help with that more than an ISP offering an inbuilt box over naked vs providing their dialtone from the exchange end.
