We have just had our local exchange upgraded to ADSL2 in the past couple of weeks.  "Great!", I thought, expecting to have a better connection.  Sadly, however, we are now experiencing appallingly slow speeds.   Prior to the upgrade we consistently had around 4 - 5Mbps downloads.  Now we are lucky if we get 3Mbps.  At the moment it is running between 1 and 2 Mbps.

The modem info seems to be good:

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):1199Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):14695
A speedtest.net test just gave me 0.25Mbps download and 0.76 upload.

This is not what I expected.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working better?   Orcon fobbed me off with a "It's not our problem".

Those are pretty good sync rates. Could you post your speedtests here for NZ, AU and US speed test servers? Also tried another modem?

This is what my modem says about noise which would seem to be good if I am reading Steve Biddle's blog correctly.  We have been using  filters at the jack points. Would it be worth getting one of Telecom's filters installed instead?

Line Coding:Trellis On Status:No Defect Link Power State:L0   DownstreamUpstreamSNR Margin (dB):13.1 12.9 Attenuation (dB):17.0 5.8 Output Power (dBm):0.0 12.8 Attainable Rate (Kbps):15552 1216 Rate (Kbps):14287 1171

Given that your sync rates look ok but your throughput is low, it pay to contact Orcon support and log a throughput complaint.

If Chorus (not Telecom anymore) involvement is required, Orcon will raise a fault with them.

Another thing to think about is the Back-haul out of the Exchange. i had 2 cases over a period of about a year that although my sync rates and noise were perfect and even telecom telling me the line was great it turned out to be a capacity issue form the Exchange to next hop. it only took a couple of months of complaining from myself and a mate who was on the same exchange for them to a. Tell us what it was (not in so many words) and then to fix it.

this is just opinion on the matter and i could be completely wrong in your case but if everyone suddenly has a "faster connection" then they tend to use it more and if they have not factored that in then it could be the issue.

In the old days backhaul congestion could be an issue. With the cabinetisation rollout and upgrade of exchanges this won't be the case, as virtually every new ISAM is fibre fed. There are still places that will have issues, but these are typically rural people on the back of a Conklin that may only have a couple of E1's as backhaul.

Back to the OP the issue isn't your sync speed, the fact your internet speeds are slower than this indicates a possible issue with your profile. Orcon are the only people who can really help you with this, and they'll contact Chorus.

yep point taken as i said just my opinion and mabye the way i read it as saying "the Exchange" he is connected to. but in saying that i should have thought about the fact that the Upgrade would have made it fibre feed back haul. it was some time ago i had these issues and now i am on a cabinet i must admit i have had no further issues.

to the OP id take it up with Orcon and let them sort it with Chorus. good luck with it as i know how painful ISPs can be and how more painful it can be having slow Broadband

I've changed the subject seeing as this is an Orcon problem, nothing related to Telecom and probably not Chorus either (also Chorus is not a part of Telecom).

Thank you for the advice.  I'll approach Orcon again.

Well, I have been in contact with Orcon and they have had my connection moved to another port in the exchange. My download speed is now between 2.5Mbps and 3.5Mbps but mostly hovers around 3.00. Orcon have now washed their hands of the problem saying that they don't guarantee speeds. Here is a quote from them:

We cannot guarantee speeds, your download speed can be any between 1Mns to 24 Mbps and upload from 0.5 to 0.9

So much for ADSL2 and good speed.

Have you tried a different modem? I also assume your speed tests are being done over a wired connection, not wireless?

I haven't tried another modem.   Under ADSL1 we were getting speeds between 4 and 5Mbps on this modem.     Would using a different modem be likely to make a difference?

(And yes, it is using a wired connection).

It is time to ditch Orcon and get broadband from other ISP.

My connection was 2Mbps with Orcon, it is now 19Mbps with Telecom.

one of my friend has also done switch, have speed changed from 1.8mbps to 17mbps.

It is definitely Orcon problem.

You need to make sure to give them a disconnection notice one month earlier to avoid any unexpected charges from Orcon.
