Gah, lost a long post so will get stright into it.

Paired with a 1Tb Maxtor One Touch Plus.

Menus are pretty.
Some Chinglish though.
When in menus, sound is muted.

There appears to be stuttering in some programs.
When it happends it is about every 5 secs.
Very annoying.
Even worse on the recording.
Only on TV1 & 2 at moment, both SD and HD programs
Changing the system tv output to NTSC seems to have fixed it.
Will see how this goes.

PVR is basic time recording, not linked to EPG.
Can watch another channel on the same mux while recording.
Play while recording.
Time shifting.
Can not get into play list without stopping playback.
Once end of a recording is reached you return to recorded list.
If you catch up to a program while it is recording, it stalls.
You have to stop playback to return to normal operation.

Exiting the PVR may result in a blank black screen.
Changing the channel will bring it back to life.
No editing features, remove ads etc.
Does not go into standby after time recording. Front display shows standby mode but it is still outputting a signal.
Received signal strength on all channel, 70% S, 100% Q

A full power cycle needs to be done to allow it to recognise the usb HDD.

Each recording is in it's own directory.
Ifo, Idx, Trp files.
After a few hours of googling, it appears you have to convert it before playing.

Yet to test
-network port
-long term stability

Impression so far
Superior to the ET
+PVR Works
+GUI is nice to look at and functional

-Wording not polished, not a major in my books but certinly would not pass as a branded product.
-Stuttering issue
-Some firmware issues, standby

Would I recommend it?
Not until I can figure out this stuttering issue.

ours will have EPG, 8 day scheduling...and no problems , not like the coship crap you just tested....!!
PVR fveature...is massive amount of work...so [patience is needed.
we have a test s/ware sample now...which appears stable...but they are still working on other features...

GOTTA copy and paste into Wordpad now and then (especially with a big post) - although, sometimes you can navigate back left arrow (Alt - left arrow) and get back to a populated form..
Back on topic - proof will be in the pudding.. (let's not start slagging until we have more info!?)

I expect this discussion doesn't turn into a "mine is better than yours". Since it was a review of another brand product I don't want to see this being hijacked for any other purpose than to discuss the YESS DVB-T9900 PVR.

Thanks for taking the plunge and giving us a review. It sounds like the unit still has a few niggly issues which could prove annoying in the long run, especially that 5 second stutter. It is also a shame that the EPG is not linked to the recording.

The proof will really be in what the support is like and how often you get updates. I know we have has issues in NZ with other suppliers and updates.

Is there a NZ site you can go to for support and downloads?

No obvious nz support site.

I have emailed the seller about upgrades.

The stuttering have been reduced greatly after switching output to NTSC but not completely eliminated.

Now only on TV2.

Another small niggle is, when setting record timer it starts at year. 2009/01/23 21:00

It really does not need the year, just adds a few extra buttons when programming

But the killer fault for me, Weekly recordings do not work.

Say I program something for Sat 1000-1100 for weekly.

And then set another for Mon 1000-1100, the Mon will bring up a conflict and delete the Sat program.

Oh well, 3rd time lucky?

We always have to be sceptical when the importer of one product criticises a competitor.

There's more than a little irony in this case though. The YESS receiver has actually delivered PVR functionality - clearly it has quite a few problems, but at least it can be evaluated by kind souls like MrWestie. The eXtra Terrestrial on the other hand has so far delivered nothing beyond a series of promises of PVR functionality and a string of missed deadlines.

If and when PVR functionality for the eXtra Terrestrial receiver is actually delivered, it will be interesting to see a comparative test.

After a bit of thinking I will be going with a HTPC based around the hvr 2200 http://www.playtech.co.nz/product.php?action=showdetail&id=5183

Dual Tuners.

Each can be configured as analog or digital.

Valid configurations, Digital/Digital _ Digital/Analog _ Analog/Analog

So I can have my HDTV and Prime :)

Should be able to build for $700.

Only down side is power consumption, but it will do all I want it to do.

Enough of STBs for now.

100% refund received.

He mentioned a FW Update coming shortly and shook his head at my unwillingness to wait.

I mentioned the stalling problem and he said signal.

In otherwords, poor receiver, as no issues like that with HTPC.

Intriguing . . . . . .

Is Pete slagging off the opposition again? So far YESS is ahead of his STB as it can actually record at the moment, something which the Ectra Terrestrial boxes can not.

Thanks for the clarification Mauricio. I was a bit confused at first, but it's simply a case of the deletion not changing the last post shown in the 'Forums > Freeview (DVB-T/DVB-S)' page. Not exactly a major forum bug as it all gets corrected by the next post in the thread anyway.

True or not it is unethical for a company to refer to competitors like this in a discusson initiated by users. It wasn't his first post on this subject and after a couple of warnings I think it's time.
