Our home theatre setup is: - Sony Bravia S-Series 40" - Sony 160GB HDD recorder - Draco HDTV5500 Freeview receiver - Yamaha RX-V565 AV receiver - Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1 speakers/sub
We have had mixed results with the Draco. After a power supply upgrade it is working awesome and gives crystal clear reception and fast channel change and EPG. The downside is we cannot record digital TV on it and when we record from the Draco to the Sony HDD recorder there is a significant loss in resolution. So this Homecast HT9200 DVR would be perfect and the Draco would go to my wife's parents who get crap analogue reception on their TV.
A number of people have mentioned that their parents need an upgrade. The same applies for our family. Our 3 TVs are all old CRTs. Only one get's Freeview with a cheap $100 STB (no recording capability). This would be a *huge* incentive to finally move into the digital age properly!
So how about those DVRs, anybody ever tried hooking up one of those ultra cheap DSE or whatever receivers together with a cheapo external harddrive... could also do the trick for cheap
I have such an old CRT that i have to stand in front of it sometimes to see clearly. I won't have any signal at all in a couple of years when analog goes off, so any freeview at all would be really handy!
I have a 42" Sharp LCD, A Panasonic 5.1 Surround sound system, And currently My Sky HD. Tried to get Freeview working in the past but was unsuccessful at the last house, So i sold the Freeview box and got Sky, Now i'm at a different house and no longer have my Freeview box. Oh the irony.
Ahh it would be nice...we have a 40" Samsung TV at the moment plugged into a super old Sony HT system.. but it would be great to allow the Wife to record Shortland Street each night so no crucial bits are missed And when will the Terrestrial Freeview service start to get some of the channels that the Satellite service has...grrrrr
My setup is an old setup but by no means _fully_ obsolete. It uses a 100 watt RMS per channel 5.1 receiever(Sony) purchased sometime between 1998 and 1999. The lounge has a 57" rear projection TV which is CRT based. CRT's produce the best colour depth even today (Just hoping the OLED will become mainstream as I feel only OLEDs can replace a CRT). Unfortunatly the TV, although capable of 1080i, accepts only Component inputs, and no 1080p. This is fine for sky sports as it does not have HDCP content, however, its STD for the rest of the broadcast. Still, Sky's HD ticket is worth the 10 bucks for just the Dolby Digital stream. The speakers were positioned in the living room with millimeter precission. Took me 2 whole days with test sounds to get it right, matching closely with room acoustics. A curtain was placed over entryways to help maintain the "rectangle" setup which I went for. At this stage I have no need for anything more the 5.1. Setup properly, 5.1 provides more then sufficient discrete preceptual audio for a small to medium sized living room. The speakers are Infinity series(now owned by JBL) and were the top of the line 3 way double woofer design at the time. It still produces the same clarity with no audibly dicenable sound degredation. The choice of 100 WATT RMS was choosen as a best fit for the living room. You dont wan something too quiet or defeningly loud, as it will take away the movie experience. Ideally Amps should never exceed half power, since signals distort so the loudness of the system must be ideal at half volume.
As can be guessed, I am a huge home theatre enthusiast. Cost currently is the limit factor preventing upgrade to a fully HD TV (it would be LED backlit LCD, since CRT rear projections are nolonger on sale supporting HDCP). Sony Playstation is sometimes used to stream video content to the TV from the computer, wirelessly, and internet browsing on tv(basic purpose).
Twitter is really tedious and confusing. I only created an account for retweeting competitions like this one (Mighty Ape also has retweeting for comps).
but the experience is awful.
i click the retweet button on this thread, it pops up some popup asking me to allow some application, I say ok, it asks for my login details, i login, it says I've denied access to the application *firstfacepalm*. I reclick the retweet button, it pops up the same popup, I say ok, I now get an allow/deny button, I allow, the retweet counter on the geekzone thread goes up, I go to my twitter, and the retweet is not there.
painful, very very painful.

We are using a DishTV s9020dvd. It is a Satelite Freeview receiver, and has only a sigle tuner. It is plugged into a early generation Sony 32" LCD TV. We have a UHF aerial and like the idea of a dual tuner Receiver.
Yes well... After two attempts to get a freeview recorder on the cheap, I now have two devices unable to tune into any freeview broadcast in my area despite the Panasonic TV on the same aerial cable picking up all channels without issue. One is an ACRyan DVR/media player with twin DVB-T tuners which apparently work in several other countries..... It has a pretty good variety of media formats it can play back plus an ftp server, bit torrent client and web interface to get in and schedule recordings from work if you get stuck there rebuilding a server.... It can browse windows shares, play internet streaming radio and connects via HDMI to the TV as well as being able to access files from external usb connected drives. The other dvice was bought on trademe from someone who imports a lot of no name Chinese gear and at boot it seems to believe it is a dvd recorder (has a "DVD recorder firmware loading" splash screen. It freezes often and managed once to see DVB-t channel information after tuning but never to get digital picture or sound. It does tune into analogue TV admittedly. These devices chief advantage (at least in theory) was that I could pop my own 1 or more TB drive in and have all the capacity I want. Now I'm running my laptop permanently on and plugged into the TV as a Freeview DVR via Windows 7 media center, which while it works pretty well, does not give me the full EPG and rather loses the point of having a laptop.....
So, yes please to the DVR and ... Who wants to take the other devices off my hands after that impressive marketing effort? ;-)
