JaBZ: I'm now more seriously thinking about building a HTPC out of the Shuttle SG33G5M instead of getting the Tvix 6500 I keep changing my mind every few days.
Know if the Intel GMA 3100 onboard video is capable of 1080P output, preferabally with Hardware decoding?.

I was going that way, but my wife thought it was way too loud. I'm using an 8600GTS card, it is fully good at HDTV, not sure how the onbaord one would have done - I never tried it. It is now back on duty as the main family PC (with a 24" wide screen)

New version of GB-PVR out today sound works perfectly now with MONOGRAM AAC Decoder.

Extract the AAC Decoder to a folder and in a command window type "regsvr32 C:\*folder*\mmaacd.ax"

Also anyone notice the Kordia Reserved 1HD channel has become Freeview | HD and last time I look it was showing the making of the sony bravia bunnies video in HD but I couldn't get any sound.

Name changed last Monday. They have also been re-organising the channel number mapping (LCN) for the various additional channels on the Kordia Mux.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Cheers for the info but does the audio on freeview hd channel work for anyone. All my other channels work fine as I am using the libfaad2 Wrapper Filter from DVBViewer under GB-PVR as it seems to be more stable at the moment.

Also another thing I forgot to mention is set-top boxes
I work at DSE and the first boxes are arriving in Auckland on the 15th of March and have a starting retail price of $599

Nice write up - got me through the pain. However even when using v3.9.2.0 of DVBViewer I still could not get AAC sound working.

Hopefully not repeating anyone here but after a lot of digging around on the dvbviewer forums I found the following:

Once the wrapper was installed (wrapper filter can now be found under plugins in the members section of dvbviewer.com) I downloaded and installed kmplayer: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4094 and dropped the libfaad2,dll into the DVBViewer filters directory.

I could now select libfaad2 as an AAC audio decoder from the drop down list on the DirectX settings page and after a restart of DVBViewer I had sound on all channels.

...and just seen your post there spideronfire... not getting any sound on the freeview hd channel either. got another mate using mediaportal and he reports the same.

I'm not so sure about that, there is a lot of pent-up demand with lots hanging back from DVB-S waiting for this, so there will bound to be a solid bunch of muppets jumping on the first box off the blocks.
I'm picking that there will be a lightening quick price reduction though as a bunch of competing models hit the market.

There is one of the sat tv distributors already claiming they will have a $299 stb available in April.

H.264 STB's are expensive however and that's the reality we're going to have to deal with in the short term.

However equally concerning is this report from TVNZ that they won't be doing HD programing until early 2010.

The Stuff article does not mention 2010 date but the Dompost article this morning does.
I would have assume that with the exception of the crappy local make reality shows and Shortland Street 90% of the stuff that they show from the US and UK is in HD anyway so why not start transmission at day one rather than wait until the Olympics which by then may be too late to get get a good install base if the STBs are price too high..

This could be incorrect, but I'd previously heard that TVNZ are mid way through a project to replace their exist tape based infrastructure with their new fully digital infrastructure, but that wont be ready until some time early next year. Until thats in place, we'll only get drip feed a few bits of high def material to wet people's appetite.

I'm thinking movie features and US/UK prime-time shows shot in HD.

Otherwise where is the selling point for people to buy $599 STB's?

The 720p upscaled content really does look amazing. IMHO most people with anything less than a 42" TV sit so far away they would never be able to tell the difference anyway between true 720p and upscaled 576i.

I've just got a new 8500GT card today so it will be interesting to test that this evening and see whether H.264 acceleration works better under Vista than the ATI2600
