I didn't notice any difference on the PQ between CH 1 and 3 on Freeview. Did notice the lack of commentary on CH 1 feed though. Went back to CH 3 for the rest of the nite..

Tonights game will also be a good comparison. Pity Bathurst isn't in HD.

Are you sure looked HD to me ?

Rugby coverage, France England match:

TV1 Great Picture, easily the best; Audio, quiet dolby 5.1 mix, commentary very quiet from centre.

Edit, TV1 commentary level came right midway in the second half, so this got a lot better.
All around a great performance by TV1.

TV3 Blurry Picture compared to TV1; Audio, dolby 5.1 as well, very clear and loud commentary from centre.

Really?? I thought the opposite TV3 picture quality looked crisper to me and the sound track also has much more bottom end...

Yeah TV1 was flat in the bottom end I agree but overall it came right towards the end.

Overall TV1 looked a lot better to me, could see the blades of grass sort of thing compared to TV3.
Were you watching on a full HD display?

Yes TV1s picture quaility was far better than tv3s, but the sound wasn't good. However you could see the compression marks in tv1s, which wasn't as visable on tv3. So obviously they do compress it differently. TV3's picture was quite blurry compared to tv1s, where tv1s was sharp, which won my business that night.

Maro tvs coverage was a bit of a joke. They are only braodcasting in SD, so event hough they do have the earlier games, people will just switch to tv1 or 3 to watch the others. They will probably lose a lot of viewers from now on, as the remaining games are now on tv1 and 3 in HD.

Yes they clearly do have different approaches, though possibly due to what else is on the mux at the time.

TV1 tonight did appear crisper but had more motion blur. The sound track was quiet and the colours less saturated, so a little bland all around. Also the blacks were a bit more grey and generally the colour was sort of washed out too.

TV3 didn't look as sharp but was more consistent, less artefacts around the players etc. Colour was vibrant and the TV3 5.1 mix is far more engaging, a little louder and deeper.

However TV3 had a shocking crackle/whistle early on from the centre channel when the commentators weren't on. Checking back later this had gone.

Tonight though was a much closer comparison, and either one was leagues ahead of the SD on Maori. Too bad if you can't get TV1 or TV2 via terrestrial!

The reason you're probably seeing more artifacts around the players on TV1 is that TVNZ put sharpening on their video signal. This is why TV3 looks softer by comparison. I believe TV3's picture is actually more what the original signal is, it's more natural and easier to watch. The sharpening TVNZ put on the picture makes things look grainy, it's just bringing out any artifacts in the image.

TV3's audio is far superior to TVNZ, no question.

I checked both 1 Sport and 3 Sport for the first 10 minutes last nite. 3 had way better 5.1 sound where by 1 seemed only to have 5.0 sound. Odd thing was at about 28 minutes into the game ch3 sound went to stereo and the same seemed to happen to ch 1 as well.. . CH 3 came back to full 5.1 after the half time break. Still couldn't tell much deference between the PQ on either channel..

Yes a Sony Bravia X500 series 1080, I would have to say the picture quality on Sky Sports is very good as well with very impressive 5.1 sound.

Ditto, as mentioned previously TVNZ are applying quite a bit of edge enhancement to their video feed.

If you want the best 5.1 sound and picture. Buy a ticket and watch the game. Its just like being there.

You know you can get rid of the commentary by turning off the centre channel. Alot more like being there.
