saeran: Mediaworks is the biggest media outlet in New Zealand. Remember that it's not just TV3 but they have a tonne of National & Local Stations (RadioLIVE, The Edge, The Rock, etc). Mediaworks reach is 3.8m at the moment. TVNZ & NZME can't compete because they aren't cross platform (at least not to the extent Mediaworks is – NZME has papers & radio).
Personally I much prefer 3 News over One, their political team – including the one and only Patrick Gower – is much better.

I call 3News 3 Labor News as they seem right up there with Labor and the Greens.

I call them both 'property inflation' news. They are often full of stories on NZ house prices, and that if people don't buy now they are going to miss out. They are often the lead stories, possibly because so many people have an interest in their property and love seeing it appreciate in value (on paper), as it makes them feel rich. I suspect at least in part due to all this coverage, house prices are higher than they should be.

Most of the actual shows I want to watch are released on demand first on thier website, before they ever make it to freeview. I wonder if that affects the ratings, as it means TVNZ can bypass the freeview platform when they do that, as many of those viewers will never use the freeview platform to watch it.

old3eyes: I call 3News 3 Labor News as they seem right up there with Labor and the Greens.

A surprising number of people still watch state television so there is obviously demand for left wing 'news'.

The problem with all of the NZ freeview "news" broadcasts (including TV3) is that they are "shows" designed to entertain, not inform - they contain very little real news, and are very parochial.

If you want real news, you have to look outside NZ.

The presenter for the NZ Grand Designs (Chris Moller) is a good choice. An actual architect no less!. I had seen a puff piece in a paper which outlined who they thought should host the show. Lets just say that it wouldn't be Grand Designs if any of them had been given the job.

Otherwise, I agree. Not much else takes my fancy. But I suspect that the demographic who frequent these forums are not the largest demographic who watch broadcast TV, so would have much less interest in a general lineup.

They're designed to push advertising. Our major networks aren't in the business of providing a public service, they're there to make money.

Mainstream TV is done for ratings. Quite literally anything to get good ratings.

Disagree. TV2 is doing a great job of bringing us shows like Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Agents of Shield and The Walking Dead extremely close to after they air in the US. A big pat on the back for them. Not so much for TV3.

TV3 airs The Blacklist mere hours after it's broadcast in the US. They used to do the same for a number of shows on Four as well.

At least TV3 shows the Blacklist in HD. From what I have seen none of the TV2 shows listed above are in HD

Problem is the quality on their website is hopeless. When it's on Freeview it's in 1080p, that huge for me.

Just a slightly OT aside.

TV stations/networks make revenue from advertising. Much of that can be avoided by DVR's etc. With On-Demand I am not sure you can skip ads.

But now I have discovered Hulu+ on demand is even more insidious when it comes to ads. They used to have 30s ads before a show and then another one in the middle, neither of which you could skip. But now they are inserting ads in the middle of dialogue! For example Sherlock Holmes: "I know who committed the murder and he's.." 30s ad break Sherlock Holmes "Moriarity!"

Talk about interrupting the flow of the show.

And Hulu+ isn't free but US$7.99/month. I must check to see if Hulu does the same.

They're certainly not in SD, switch to TV4 to see SD.

Indeed. I don't even consider our networks' streaming services to be options because of that reasons.

fv hd is 1080i not 1080p
