Only 2015 models according to freeviews own website, and I am guessing yours is a 2014 model?

yeah it's a 2014 model bugger it.

You never know, they may release a new app for it. But I suspect not, because they will want to sell new tvs with new feature.

It's not an app - it's core functionality (HbbTV) built into the device. This expands on the MHEG5 requirement for Freeview.

Freeview were trying to find partners to deploy MHEG5 based interactive services for a number of years, but this significantly expands on that with a far superior offering.

alasta: It's a shame DishTV is the only manufacturer committing to set top boxes because I have found the quality of their product to be pretty dubious. My TV is only three years old so I won't be upgrading to one of these fancy new ones for at least a couple of years.

Were out with the old and in with the new.. trust me you will enjoy what we have to offer in the next few months. :-)

Thanks Josh. The unit that I had trouble with looked like a cheaply made Chinese badge engineered product. If you have better quality product in the pipeline then I'd definitely be keen to give it another shot - Freeview+ is certainly appealing to me.

So was it a mistake for me to have run coax to every room during my current renovations? Or will we still be watching traditional TV for some time yet? Argh I am confused.

Nothing is happening to traditional television, it will continue to broadcast on Freeview and nothing will impact your equipment, FreeviewPlus is just an extra if you want to catch up on TVNZ OnDemand, 3Now and Maori TV OnDeamand straight from the TV Guide, provided your equipment is connected to the internet.

A little off topic, but does anyone know whether there are plans to broadcast "normal" (linear) Freeview over UFB? I have very weak Freeview HD coverage but have a (non-Vodafone) UFB connection that could theoretically be harnessed for TV, and there are probably other people in the same situation.

All Magic TV models will not be supporting FreeviewPlus/HBBtv

So to me this seems to imply that Freeview Plus is freeview on demand - no internet required!!!

I presume however this will be a new set top box that you connect to an aerial as well as internet???

I just worry that no one will tell the technology challenged peoples that they need to upgrade to unlimited internet to really enjoy these services.

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

When someone accesses OnDemand content they will be prompted by a message warning them that any usage will go towards their internet data cap and details on usage per hour/half hour of watching content.

Another question I have. Will the OnDemand content be in HD? At the moment TVNZ and TV3 OD are pretty awful quality.

That is a question you will need to ask TVNZ and Mediaworks

Tivo will still be relevant, because not all content is available ondemand, due to licensing, such as movies. Also it is only available for a short period of time. TIvos still rule IMHO, and you don't use any bandwidth, and can copy content onto your computer to watch later. I personally don't think this new feature is all that great, and is already available using ondemand apps or via the websites, and the quality isn't that great. You also don't know what adverts they will be pushing down the pipes in the future, while with TiVo you can skip. You can't skip ondemand ads, and more and more ads are being added.

Not obsolete. You can still use them for what you bought them for, you just can't use them for this new service.
