question ?
what happens to the other 3 channells on uhf fta when analogue is turned off, ?

juice tv ,

triangle,

racing

sky have made it quite clear that the next olympics will be on prime in hd .
there are only two ways to do this .
1, dvb-s2
2, dvb-t
sky dont need kodia to broadcast a dvb-s2 so that only leaves dvb-t
sky dont need freeview to broadcast dvb-t only kordia
so it is quite possible that sky could introduce a dvb-t stb and bypass freeview, they already have enough frequencies and with 20,000 or so uhf subscibers still out there they have a ready made audience,
it is entirely possible for sky to setup its own fta dvb-t in direct competition to freeview .
after all its not about how we watch tv but who has the most control of the money stream,

Jarno:
JKRNZ: Nate - The key reasons to have Prime on Freeview HD (dvb-t) are seeing all the detail in 16:9 (not the cut down 4:3 version) and the digital quality.

Just because it is on Freeview HD does not mean it will be in 16:9 or in HD. I can well imagine that Sky will make the quality as crappy as possible, to give people an incentive to switch to Sky.

Of course Prime will be in 16:9 just like the sky feed. But as for HD would doubt it. Not straight away at least.

I've never heard Sky make those comments in those words.

Sky have purchased the rights to the Olympics. Expect fantastic multi channel coverage on Sky's platform that will include multiple HD channels.

As a condition of being a PayTV broadcaster they are also required to deliver FTA Olympics coverage. This is where Prime comes in and will enable them to deliver FTA content that may or may not be HD by then.

There is still the big unknown as to what will happen with rumored plans for Sky to roll out their own DVB-T network which is something they have agin hinted to recently.

The Olympics last year were in HD for FTA on one channel. If Sky doesn't provide HD FTA in 3 years time they will become the laughing stock broadcaster.

According to Ted Gibbons, of NZ PC World, in the June, 2008 edition, "Further down the track, Sky has secured the rights to both the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancover and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. These two events will receive saturation coverage with the London Olympics having 22 hrs of high-def coverage per day on the Prime channel backed up by a further eight Sky channels broadcasting 24 hours a day."

Ahh

It will be interesting to see if that is the case.

I would hope that the horse channel and juice get onto freeview soon as well. SKy have many essentially unused UHF licenses sitting there broadcasting non stop, makes sense for them to flick them over to digital and put some FTA stuff on them which they can put promo material for other sky stuff along with

Might be on UHF but it's 4:3 analogue. That doesn't really count these days.

Well yes, but its not a 21st century broadcasting platform. Who can be bothered flicking between analog and digital, no EPG, missing a lot of picture. IMO the sooner all analog broadcasts are removed from UHF the better.

Not everyone with DVB-T can get Prime, and not everyone who can get Prime on UHF can get DVB-T.

It needs to be on both, but they are quite likely to only offer it FTA Digital on DVB-T.
