just been playing around with mine a bit.  I dropped the output to 576i, which since its a standard def unit should be OK, and it seems to have stopped crashing

Just received ours today! Was very thankful to find this thread as I was getting no channels via the New Zealand setting. The England setting did work however!!

Have it set to 576p and don't seem to be getting any crashes yet!!

My question would be: given that I have quite an old CRT TV with only A/V ports on the front and back, does this unit not work solely from the RF In and RF Loop Through like a VCR does? Is there anyway that I can have my DVD player (which requires A/V ports) and the Magnavox unit both connected and working?

The only way I can make it work at present is to turn off the Magnavox and plug the DVD player into the front ports.

Any suggestions?

Oooops as I was typing this up the Magnavox crashed - I think it may be sent back now!! I can't see my family putting up with it like this!! Frown

I'm guessing you're talking about composite when you say A/V. Composite cannot carry anything beyond 576i, so even if you set it to 576p it'll still give 576i to the TV.

The quality of RF modulation via the RF connector is terrible and is unlikely your "Magnavox" or any other MPEG-4 terrestrial receiver supports it. There are standalone units you can buy but there would be no point.

Many people have high quality CRTs with quality S-video and component connectors sitting idle in their garage. If you ask around you may be able to pick and choose a much better model than you've got now with a range of connectors for free.

The price of the "Magnavox" sounded too good to be true. The cheapest I've seen a full NZ terrestrial receiver retail for was the Sommet STB from DSE at $179. Even the Kogan box in Australia costs much more than NZ$65

Yeah composite is the one - the red/yellow/white connectors.

Will be sending the magnavox back - as people have said - too good to be true - at least to good to work properly!!

The Mrs is keeping an eye out for a better TV anyway - may just get one with built in freeview - in the meantime we'll live with what we've got!!

Cheers

Recieved my DVB-999 this morning. I have a Telefunken CRT TV with only the red/yellow/white conectors and S-Video available. Using the supplied cable, plugged in and switched on. No sign of the Main Menu page. With the loop cable installed, good pic and sound from TV. The only response from the box is 'SCAN' when I press the OK button on the remote, but nothing happens. Nothing else works.
Is the box faulty or am I missing something?. Can't see anything else, it looks so simple. Is it ME!!
Any help appreciated before I consider more drastic measures. This looked like a good interim measure untill I up-date the TV.

It sounds like your box is faulty. Even if you manage to make it work, the previous comments don't sound encouraging.

If your CRT is a good size and quality it can be worthwhile buying a terrestrial receiver for it. Make sure you get one that supports S-video as composite doesn't do justice to the broadcast quality.

The quality of CRT + Freeview|HD + S-video / component is really good.

Received my unit this morning. Spent the next 2 hours stuffing around with it. Damn hopeless. Current country is Russian. Worked for a while on Hungary but then crashed. Nice small box though. Must have missed out on including the bits that actually make it work!!!! The best run i've had is 30 minutes without a crash. Seems to crash even while pushing buttons on the remote. Just another piece of cheap junk.  Should have known better. Buyer beware!!!

Same deal here. Feels cheap and nasty. Unit wouldn't pick up any channels with the default settings, (Initally thought reception as I do live in a difficult reception area, but the 2 HDTVs in our house picked up Freeview with no issues), changed region to england as suggested and it did indeed pick up all the channels. Now that I've got that working has anyone experienced unsyncrohnised video and sound on TV2?
