We just bought a Magnavox DVB-999 on 1-day.co.nz, and it arrived this morning.

So we plug it in and scan for channels - nothing.  Hmmm HTPC has no issues so what is going on here?

More digging much frustration and annoyance.

Found the manual channel selection and found the Auckland DVB-T frequencies, hello can't select 538.0, only can pick 536.5 or 543.5.

Hmmm I think, even though it says it is configured for New Zealand I think it is trying to use the wrong frequency set, a quick google of some of the available frequencies reveals that it is configured for Australia.

There must be another country around that uses NZ frequencies, another quick google of 538.0 reveals that is used in the UK, back to the DVB-T box, reconfigure for the UK (England in the menu).

Auto scan again, there we go found all the channels, all sorted :)

Let us know how you get on with the box otherwise, would be nice to know how a cheap box like that goes.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Will do, it does say it supports recording to USB drive etc, might have a play next weekend with that.  Intial impressions are good, menus a little clunky.

Was goint to use the HTPC, but it can't cope, goes to 100% CPU and the picture stutters.

Got my receiver this morning and I'm not impressed.

Changed the region to England and picked up channels but after a few minutes the unit 'crashes' and can no longer pick up channels till I turn it on and off.

EDIT: Even getting crashes right after the unit turns on.  I bought 2 receivers and they are both doing the same thing.

Hmm.

This appers to be turning into another mass produced/sold Made-In-China special (infact google DVB-999 and thats mostly what you get)

Thankfully I warned 2 workmates off them :P Figured for <$100 there has to be some catch. Given even my Korean knockout Vantage was $250+ with USB PVR functionality and still has its quirks.

Note the JC-Matthews re-badge had similar issues back in its day.

Sorta starts to indicate when it comes to DVB gear money does indeed talk.

Too many going down the GNU firmware road and trying to pump out the cheapest PVR at the expense of everything else about them it seems.

Sorry people but if it sounds to be too good to be true it is.

Even the authorised/certified freeview boxes can be lemons. I purhcased a Hills one, and it regularly crashes and freezes up. Becuase it is intermittent, they couldn't find any problem with it, and wouldn't switch it either.

New TV with built in DVB-T tuner on our to do list for early next year, just really want this thing so the kids can watch TV6, saves mucking around with dishes.

You are best to contact them via their facebook account. They have in the past had major issues with replying to emails. Alternatively you can try phoning torpedo7 which is the same company.

just hooked mine up, seems to randomly crash every 5mins or so, which is a shame as the picture quality etc is pretty decent for the price

guessing 1 day is going to have a lot of returns to deal with
