Do you by any chance have blocked access to Google DNS (if trying to use third party geo-unblocking DNS services)?

Nothing is blocked, and everything is working.

The last two days the only thing that works on the replacement SmartVU is Netflix.  It makes no sense that one app works and none of the rest.  Either a bad batch or just a crappy device.  Even when all of the apps were working it could never be found to cast to.  Likely to give up and go back to the old Chromecast.

I bought one for my daughters room at Xmas as she has no aerial outlet in her room and it runs perfectly 99% of the time. Freeview, Lightbox, Youtube, Netflix and most recently TVNZ Ondemand all work fine.

Have you tried logging in with a different Google account? Just wondering if there is an issue with the account you're logging in with. The other thing to try would be taking it to a friend/family members place to confirm it isn't an issue with your setup.

Has anybody managed to get Amazon Prime video running on one of these units?

I did a factory reset and it seems to have done the trick for the last couple of days.  I've been adding apps one by one to see if any one in particular causes problems.

Yes I have got Prime Video working.

I did it by first installing Kodi, install sandmann79, varstahl repository, and install from video add ons.

( Amazon VOD 0.7.1 by Sandmann79, varstahl )

You need to change the language from German to English when running.

Does work but very slow to load list of titles.

Hope this helps.

Anyone else have problems with the unit overheating, and developing sound issues that persist until you restart the device?

Is it worthwhile returning the thing to get it replaced or is it just the nature of the beast and I need to just put a heat sink on it?

Not had any issues with mine here. I have 2 of them, one in the lounge and one in the family room.

They're connected by 802.11ac 5Ghz, and have been working mostly flawlessly for me as far as the apps.

I'm using them for Lightbox, Netflix, Kodi, Spotify, Plex, TVNZ OnDemand and Freeview.

The only one i've had problems with is Freeview, have to log in EVERY damn time I open the app.

The biggest thing im waiting on right now is for Spark Sport to release their app to Android TV. But at least these have Chromecast functionality so we can cast from the Android/Apple mobile app for now.

So what's the goss on these things now, are they a buy or don't buy?

Guy at work is looking at one for him and his dad (doesn't want to deal with aerial issues, and is potentially leaving vodafone tv).

I guess he wants freeview channels, no recording and access to ondemand, netflix and possibly lightbox, you tube etc.

Wonder if it would be worth a sticky post at the top with current status of the box, and streaming content?

Mine has been fine since I did a factory reset on day 1.  It appeared glitchy once but I worked out it was an app needing an update that didn't happen automatically or let me know.  It let me know the next time I used it, updated, and has been fine since.  It was TVNZ on demand - also a bit of a pain that it doesn't seem to allow selecting earlier seasons where multiple seasons are available.  If I want to watch that stuff on that screen I cast from another device (the benefit of having chromecast built in).

Can I just ask if this has the same functionality as a Chromecast Ultra 4K?

No, it has more. The difference between Smartvu and Chromecast is the Chromecast is for casting only, while the Smartvu has Chromecast built in to it, and also has apps, including Freeview.  So you actually end up casting a lot less.

You can get a Smartvu 4k ultra.

Yes sorry I should have been clearer.  I meant does this basically have a Chromecast Ultra built in?  Can I cast in 4K?

From what you are saying the answer is no?
