I personally wouldnt be in a hurry for having the external HDD receord facility yet. The option which I believe is being taken is to wait until the originators of the MHEG5 code, which gives this receiver the EPG 8 day programme Guide, finish and release a new MHEG5 update / extension at the end of this year. The benefits of this are; - All the programme lists are already there and one can scroll now and select. - If TV channels are running late with the start of a programme and late finishing, then the lists will automaticly update and the recording times update. - No confusion in operation as all receivers with MHEG5 will use the same coloured buttons to do; book /record / play and possibly pause/record (time shift), fast forward / rewind etc. - Having to wait about 4 months is good as technology developments are moving at a fast pace with recorded programme control and we may even see editing of recorded material as a possibility.
I dont believe we will see ext HDD record function in any Freeview receivers using the MHEG5 EPG until early next year.
To go ahead and do a makeshift job, and have to undo it for something far better, is madness.

What your proposing sounds really good too, a more open and useable MHEG5. However, I'm not really seeing why we should wait. SAT based PVR's are muddling away just fine without the ability to alter the timing of a show should the broadcaster be running late (and acknowledge it). A 2-5 minute padding in each direction would normally be enough to catch most broadcasts. Confusion in operation can surely only exist if you have multiple units from different manufactures? While I agree a remote where the buttons do what the buttons say is always good. I think the coloured buttons on our current remote could serve double duty in the EPG/Record page. If they do add USB recording, will they also send out new remotes? Editing shows would be a nice additional feature, if you wanted to archive and keep your recordings. But, I think you'd find the majority of people just wanna tape that show they'll miss because they're working, away or doing something else outside the lounge.. And when they've watched it, they dump it. Why do we wait 4 months? An interim solution to simply record our digital television is not madness, for those that want it....

The mysky HDi pvr using their kind of EPG is not happy muddling away ;-). It is a total pain in the ar#e. Here is the issue.
Record 2-3 programs back to back on the same channel using one touch to record in the epg. then wait until the program has started and then start watching while it is recording. When ANY recording fineshes recording you get a message on screen saying the recording has finished press back to continue. So you do that as the back button is the only one that does anything, then it starts playing the next recording, appearing as if the first recording stopped half way through. Argh! Then what you have to do is go back to the begining of the last recording and fast forward to the point where the message came up to watch the end of the program. Or just turn not bother and watch something else. These kind if bugs appear when a device is not tested sufficently. From what I have seen so far, as soon as they get it to record and play back ff rewind and pause you will get a firmware upgrade. Will it be tested to consumer release quality, I very much doubt it.Welcome to my world!
And are other people still experiencing audio dropouts? Last I heard there were still some via coax and optical outs, though it had improved (but not fixed altogether) with the later firmware updates. The satlink site mentions still investigating only the coax output. The only excuse given was that it was localised interference that magically did not affect the picture or normal sound, only the digital outs.
Yes, I was seeing (well really hearing I guess) this problem last night. I was getting audio dropouts via the optical output (on TV 1) and it magically did not affect the picture. It also did not seem to affect the signal quality or strength indicator showing on the screen.
I don't know if the same problem occurs on the analogue audio outputs yet as it was only yesterday that I repaired a faulty aerial cable that was the cause of my earlier problems.
Hi, have been following this thread for a while now. I have an E.T. box but only firmware 1.03. When I saw the hiccup on channels lost, I held off uploading the firmware. With version 1.05 out now, and appears to be no problem, do I use the 1.05 version and ignore the 1.04 or do I use both?

No need to use both. Just install 1.05 if you want to.
All the updates have been incorporated with the 1.05 firmware. The 1.04 has gone and is history.
Many of us have no problems over reception. To those who have the odd pixelation and audio dropouts, its hard to tie down what is the cause without more information . Below I have come up with what could be a useful report. I propose the above, as the Composite Red / White sound is acknowledged as an issue. I was going to test the relationship of distortion to the volume control level, as one possibility is the respective analogue output amplifiers are clipping at higher levels, the bottom amplifier not coping so well, hjowever i note the top one also does it, all be it less so. I plan to test this and report back, unless someone beats me to it!
The list above, thats OK with me, but in making a report, maybe delete lines where one cant test eg I have no coax or optic output so I would delete these lines from a report.
If one is describing the distortion on the Red / White outputs it is best heard on voice content and appears to be a modulated distortion and as you say, its worse on the bottom outputs. Its not a peak distortion. On the top outputs minor distortion is there, but to most people it wont be heard. Even made more difficult when, TV sound techs incorrectly adjust compression and limiter devices. Frankly most havent a clue.
The Clock is a strange one. Two weeks ago I ran two receivers for over two days and they were only 1 min difference in time left continuiously on standby. However today switched off at 4pm and by 8pm was out by one hr exactly. Checking with other equipment in close proximity if this is a factor or daylight saving anomoly.
re: digital audio dropouts. We're connected to our Marantz reciever via optical, Marantz has an interesting feature where the relays kick in to mute the signal if the signal drops out, so that can lengthen the audible muting. Was annoying with older DVD's too, on the layer change the film would mute for a second... Always made me giggle with the comment on the back of DVD's "layer change may trigger a slight pause" - no?
Anyhow - spot the guy off topic. Sooooo, optical connection from ET to reciever. Watching medium last night no drop outs although the EPG wasn't working earlier in the night so I gave it a reboot - EPG still wasn't working after that... put it down to network problem. Last week watching CSI Miami, we had just one dropout on the audio track.
So it is less and still random - but still there.... I only turn on the marantz for the shows in dobly digital..
hey mattstutter, I'm in the same situation as you. I only turn on the receiver for 5.1 shows and these have always been pretty good since day one in my opinion. You get the odd dropout with them but never very long for me. Apparently C4 is a good choice to test 2 channel sound as you can leave it on like a radio up loud.
Another drop out last night on the optical digital connection. Quite a long one during the start of CSI Miami, just as they revealed the meth lab in the closet.... Add it to the fix list next to USB HDD recording...
