Makes my MagicTV and TiVo (both of which I still have sitting in boxes under my bed waiting for me to get rid of Sky) obsolete.

Looks good though - might be an excuse for a new TV.

I would highly recommend you don't buy a new smart TV just because it has this feature, because that feature could be removed at anytime as technology changes. For example youtube from slightly older smart TVs is being removed, as new apps are not being built for them. This includes brands like Sony. Best to keep the smarts separate from the TV, using a separate box. WHen it comes to smart tv's the smart doesn't refer to the buyer if they buy it solely because it is a smart tv.

Oh no, I wouldn't buy a new TV just to get this service. I would, however, use this as an excuse to get a new toy :)

Does anyone else find this rather low? 10% of all TVs perhaps, but I would have thought a good chunk of households would have at least one smart TV. Perhaps a lack of understanding of what qualifies a smart tv?

From the freeview website, it looks like this new service will only be on 2015 TVs or newer , as it specifies the brands, and says 2015 models. Then there is probably no guarantee they will continue to support it for more than a couple of years. I certainly wouldn't buy a TV now because it is advertised as a smart TV, as the manufacturers can just drop support for smart apps at a whim.

My 2014 'WebOS' LG SmartTV supports the same functionality (HBBtv) in Oz, so I'm reasonably optimistic it will work here too.

trig42: Another question I have. Will the OnDemand content be in HD? At the moment TVNZ and TV3 OD are pretty awful quality.

Is this that corny thing that needs an RF feed to get an app so that it can then not get content off that RF feed, like that test channel they had, or is it a proper app that you will install so TVs with no RF feed are able to get content online?

FreeviewPlus isn't an app, you use your remote control to control everything on screen..

Ah, You will need to be in the Freeview|HD coverage area in order to receive FreeviewPlus

So it seems pretty pointless to me then. If they arnt doing apps so that you can get it over internet only then its really a waste of time.

Europe has had HBB for a few years. Even my Samsung ES8000 from 2012 supports it. Have a look on Youtube theres a few videos showing how to enable it on various models.

Some tv's should support it with nothing more than a firmware update. Or its turned off in the internal service menus.

I've looked and can't find anything, but if anyone has links to how to enable HbbTV on slightly older Sony TV's, could they please post them here? I will likely be fine with my Panasonic PVR but my sister has a Bravia one model back from one I've seen mentioned with HbbTV capability, and I'd be keen to see if it will still work.

Only 2015 models according to freeviews own website, and I am guessing yours is a 2014 model?

yeah it's a 2014 model bugger it.

Interestingly, looking at a couple of reviews of my TV (Panasonic 42AS700) it's claimed that it supports HbbTV. Will be interesting to see if that's the case.

Just to confirm, the T1050 wont be supporting the service (even though streaming services such as World TV work fine on it)?
