My question is concerning playing files.

I have a Phillips Blu-ray player which also has a USB to plug in a hard drive to play files from. It can read up to about 500GB files, so it can play my whole collection of music and videos, which is fantastic!. It can play MP3, MP4, AVI etc without any problem. It can also play MKV, however appears limited in MKV navigation. Unlike other file types, you can not go directly to a part of the file without it hanging, and also if you go more the 4x ahead or 2x back it jumps to the next or previous file and can also hang again. So my questions are:

1) How much disk space for files can the Panasonic read through its USB port?

2) Does it navigate MKV files properly when it plays them (specs say it can play them).

I cannot see it having any problems reading an external usb drive in excess of 2tb+

I have had no problems with it so far on my MKV files, mine are all on a Drobo FS (Network storage).

It is Queen's Birthday weekend in a few days and Harvey Norman tends to have good specials round then, so maybe wait and see it price comes down. Of course, there's always the asking for a cash discount trick there. I think you can get 20% off with that or some such.

I agree! Never ever pay full retail. If it's not on sale, ask for a discount. If they don't offer one, go elsewhere. I always ask for money off large ticket items and I normally get it. I even got a discount on my last iMac, and getting people to discount Apple products is pretty rare. #blackbeltshopper

100percent have them for $448, which is about 25% less than HN offering ($588) as of today.

You 're looking at the wrong model. That pricing is the one with the Blu-ray player and 500GB. The one are talking about is currently $474.00 at HN but with a cash discount it will be quite a bit less than $448.00

New Antenna man came around yesterday and confirmed what I thought - it'll be possible to get Freeview.  He said you'll need the Antenna in a different place than the other guy suggested (exactly where I thought it should go, actually!) but it'll require two of them because of how our roof is shaped and safety etc.

So might be a week or two away yet, but at least all is not lost!

ok im having a slow day but would the pano recorder work with a satellite feed or is it terrestrial only ?

i need to ditch sky and get a decent freeview unit with record facility and this may be the half way house solution.. i cant get HD freeview as we are satellite only but im fed up paying the extra cash each month..

This is a UHF box only.

Pretty sure they also have a Sat one too... not 100% sure though.

It's UHF only and even if you get a Sat decoder you can't use the HWT260 for recording because it has no external inputs available.

You need the BWT840 for recording from external equipment but the inputs are composite A/V only so quality won't be great.

Then you'll pretty much be looking at one of the Dish TV units or a cheap Chinese box...

BUT!...

IMHO the best satellite units you can get are the Vu+ units. I've had a Vu+ Solo2 (twin DVB-S2 tuners) for the last 3.5 years and it's been rock-solid with not a single fault. Takes a little bit of setup, but once you're done it just WORKS!

Here's one on Trademe:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/tvs/satellite-receivers/auction-1101019522.htm

I recently moved to an area with FreeviewHD coverage and bought one of these Panasonic units, (the older DMR-PWT550GZ) I'm happy with it and it works well for what I paid for it (<$300) My only gripe is that when recording overlapping shows it ties up both tuners even when shows are on the same mux. Not a huge deal but as my Vu+ Solo2 can record multiple channels on the the same transponder using only one tuner (I once had 6 shows recording at the same time across two transponders!) it's annoying enough that I'm considering getting a Vu+ Duo2 with both twin DVB-S2 and twin DVB-T/T2/C tuners!
