Rikkitic:

If TV One would quit shelling out for Ubers to ferry people around for completely pointless live crosses, they could afford to pay another newsreader.

i don't know.

that's a lot of uber. and that's 2004 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=9003123 + inflation (remember house prices have tripled since 2004 ...)

Perhaps if their execs stopped eating smashed Avocado? :)

It's fake news the whole thing, it was the feta that is the real cost in that dish!

Batman: Why does it cost 1 million bucks to pay someone to read lines? Maybe that's the underlying issue.

Do you have the details for the TVNZ news readers as I doubt any of them come close to $1M these days.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/122188676/wendy-petrie-simon-dallow-why-do-we-care-who-reads-the-6pm-news

right at the bottom it says though Judy Bailey was on 800k, nowadays they are "nowhere near" that.

so we know it's at least 100-200k less than 800k per person

can't find anything else. I'm sticking with my figures. let's say 500k each = 1 mil for the news

but if the 2012 $ didn't go up AND male = female pay it's 350k x 2 = 700k.

My wife says she'd do it for $100 grand.  Take it or leave it.

The $44,000 gender pay gap TVNZ tried to keep secret *

Now, the Herald was very cheeky by saying that it's the pay gap TVNZ tried to keep secret. TVNZ publishes the company-wide pay gap every year in its annual report. The Herald originally wanted to know the salaries of the 10 top highest earning male and female employees. The Herald says:

"It became apparent that privacy concerns were rooted in so few women being employed in top-paying roles that releasing average pay rates by gender could allow the identification of individual salaries."

Which is opinion masquerading as fact. How very Herald.

TVNZ provided the Herald with average salaries for its top 20 employees.

"The data shows the majority of TVNZ's 20 highest-paid presenters were men, who between 2017-19 earned an average of $254,510 a year. Women in the group were paid $210,597."

So, actually that 40k-ish gender pay gap is already the pay gap at the top.

TVNZ's Kevin Kenrick responded:

Kevin Kenrick: Balancing protection of privacy with the public interest *

"The $40,000 figure does not in any way represent a reliable measure of the difference in pay between female and male presenters at TVNZ.

The data reported on by the Herald on Sunday was averaged to protect individuals' right to privacy, so it couldn't and doesn't provide an accurate comparison of individual pay by gender.

The data provided included presenters who worked one day a week and others who worked five days per week. It represented some programmes that run for 52 weeks of the year and others for part of the year. It included individuals with multiple decades of presenting experience and others with less than three years' experience. It also represented a different set of individuals over each of the three years of data based on when they joined or left the business."

Before anyone says it: No - Simon and Wendy are not paid for by the taxpayer and no, you don't have a right to know what their salary is.

* Unfortunately those links are "premium"

The gender pay gap is fake news.

Just like Coronavius, round earth and global warming. Wake up people!

Also - I am a very stable genius and can pass a cognitive test much betterer than anyone.

kiwifidget:

For $1million, couldn't we get Morgan Freeman to read the news?

Morgan Freeman was pursuaded to do a version of the Shawshank Redemption voice over on the Graham Norton show.
His script ended with "I hope people stop asking me to do stupid voice overs like this. I hope."

Do reported salaries reflect all the other opportunities like magazine covers (now gone since most of the mags stopped)? I assumed they got paid for being fake news.
