Correct.

I got my playtv from play.com awhile back, not sure if they still ship them overseas but I do remember that there was a warning about not shipping stuff over 1kg that I ignored.

Playtv also fully supports remote play which is handy, so you can record/watch tv via your PSP. This will also work on your PC once the open remote play client is updated.

The audio is a problem even within the PS3. There's an option to export a saved program from within the playTV software out to the videos section of the PS3 main menu/XMB. However, once out on the main menu you can not get any audio with any channel other than TV3, as TV3 exports with a dolby soundtrack. This is a problem with the PS3 firmware itself not knowing how to play this sort of file because apparently the audio is there if you copy this file off to another computer. Hope all that makes sense!

Yes, we've jumped quite a way ahead with the audio, though other countries are following suit to some degree now, someone had to be first. My big annoyance is the lack of EIT data on the terrestrial EPG, which is just some nonsence about bandwidth, but come on it's like 1% of the total available space. And that's even more than is available on the satellite service, yet somehow there's still a full weeks worth of EIT data on that platform.

When NZ gets added as a region on the actual PlayTV setup (currently we're working under the 'other' area location) it will have an EPG and all the other freeview limiting criteria as well. We are lucky here that as long as they keep the 'other' setup region available we should be able to switch back to this setup and enjoy the system we have now, which allows for 1min skip forward and the ability to export the recorded programs. I can't see how freeview NZ will approve any device that doesn't use their MHEG5 EPG though, so it will be interesting to see if this means the PlayTV version will be dropped altogether.

That's a shame. Looks like the PlayTV software has code to handle AAC-HE LATM audio but it hasn't made its way into the firmware where the normal XMB player would be invoking the code. Given there is no requirement outside a few countries for this capability one can see why Sony hasn't seen fit to upgrade the firmware.

Since they already have the code to enable its playback on the PS3 from within PlayTV, you would think they will just add it at some point within a PS3 firmware upgrade, wouldn't you?

I've just seen that mine has arrived in the country - should be delivered Monday :) If there are questions people want answered about it I'm happy to do my best once I have it at home.

Think I'll install a 500GB harddrive in my PS3 tomorrow...

EDIT: Wondering if any other users have managed to transfer files larger than 4GB off the PS3? For myself I'm wondering if I can split them with a video splitter from within a Linux boot and use that as a workaround...

Enjoy, pays to have the bluray remote in some ways. I'm really hoping the logitech harmony PS3 - bluetooth adaptor allows me to assign PS3 commands to real buttons, like record and guide etc? Hope so.

PlayTV suffers a bit in that it's based on the bluray remote or worse the game controller, and they don't have buttons like record, channel up etc. There's no dedicated PlayTV remote.

Go for the Scorpio / Western Digital drives, apparently the Seagate Momentus options have been a bit flaky with PlayTV for some reason. Pconlineshop has WD 500 Gb for like $120 at the moment, crazy cheap.

I wish the PS3 came up like a network mass storage drive. You don't seem to be able to remotely view the contents of the drive across a network connection, which I'd really hoped you'd be able to do. That would make deleting certain photo/music/video files etc really easy to do. I haven't networked my PS3 yet so haven't experienced this, but it seems like it's a pretty closed shop. Anyway, being able to do this would have got around the 4GB file transfer problem to external drives.

I dont believe there's any way to access the PS3 fiels from within Linux. There's really no way to get larger files off the PS3 HDD as far as I know.

It's pretty slack of Sony to not get the audio support sorted for XMB. Same goes for MHEG in PlayTV. Think about it, they already have both solutions fully working in every single Freeview NZ accredited HDTV they sell, which means they have the code/IP to do it.

All the Logitech adapter does is map the current Blu Ray remote buttons to your Harmony. Doen't playTV come with a sticker for the Blu Ray remote? Aren't some of the Blu Ray buttons mapped to PVR functions? How do you change channel? Do you have to punch in the number only? Pretty much, if the Blu Ray remote does it, the Harmony will do it.

Yeah it all works from bluray remote, just saying it would be cool to map to my harmony, so I can have a proper button for record etc, not the start button etc.

The sticker is good quality, just has to include both the original button name and the new one, so it's all quite small font, and dark blue too, so not so easy for some to read. It all works, channel change is via R1/L1 buttons or via channel browse of now and next disply and selecting enter on the channel that you want.

Quite right about the not being able to access the PS3 partition while in linux boot mode, been doing a little research. Quite an intractable problem, other than the rather time intensive method, which would be to record in half hour blocks and stitch the files together...

Which is my biggest problem. I'd love to import one, but the lack of EPG is just a big annoyance
