Don't forget www.freeviewnz.com too.

There is only one importer, who supplies to multiple different resellers including (but not limited to) those companies named previously in this thread by people here who have placed orders thus far.

Could one of you satellite experts answer the following question for me:

-  If I was to order one of these magical Vu+ Duo boxes that you are all talking about...

-  Is there any way to make it receive TV1/2/3 in HD as available thru MySky HDi?

-  Because these are FTA channels, I am assuming that they are broadcast unencrypted and I would not need a Sky Card to view them?

-  Or are they actually encrypted before broadcast so as to lock non-Sky viewers out of those HD channels on the satellite?

Any suggestions or comments much appreciated.

sorry but tv one tv2 and tv3 hd need a sky card .
the only channel on satellite that is free to view off optus d1 and in hd is sbs2hd .
if you had a freeview only sky subscription i believe the card would work in the vu+ duo
a previous post gave the card numbers that were compatible .
the picture quality from the duo on hd channels is noticeably sharper than the mysky box

Small correction: the SBS HD channel available at the moment is "SBS HD" and it carries the same programming as SBS ONE, not SBS TWO.

It may not be there forever either.  My guess is that it is only there because SBS had to use a transponder that beams to both Australia and New Zealand in order to get a signal to Tasmania, probably due to transponder congestion on the Australia-only beams.  If they find another way, it could disappear at any time.

Sadly indeed, it seems that until Optus D1 is replaced, or Sky relinquishes some of its transponders or ceases encrypting the TVNZ traffic it retransmits, there will be no  satellite Freeview HD.

Thanks very much for explaining that.

Currently I have the first generation MySky and love the PVR features, but have found we seldom watch anything except FTA channels, so am tossing up whether to upgrade to MySky HDi, or ditch the Sky sub. and get something like a Vu+ Duo.

As you have explained though, there is no way to get TV1/2/3 in HD without remaining a Sky subscriber at some level.  That changes the economics rather drastically :(

you could  a pay  the one off to sky for the mysky $599 and pay for the std  subscription $51.54/month
or  b,   the  vu+ duo without a hard drive is selling for a tad over $600.00

I just noticed something else here: what's a "freeview only sky subscription"?
It sounds interesting to me - if I could get just the FTA stuff off Sky (in HD where available) for a nominal cost, I'd probably sign up.  I can't see anything on the Sky website though.  The cheapest (and that strains the definition of cheap) is the "Basic" package that includes more than just the FTA stuff.
Any links?

We already paid the $599 to Sky when MySky launched in Feb 2005.  It means we can upgrade to MySky HDi for $99 (??? I think) and don't need to pay the HD ticket if only viewing FTA channels in HD.

So it's either pay $99 for MySky HDi or pay $600 for Vu+ Duo with the monthly sub. of $51.54 continuing in either case...

A bit of a no-brainer really unless there's something I've missed???

Here it is.

Note that it's $18.29 per month, but no access to HD channels is provided :(
