Set mine up tonight, awesome!

Can't believe how good the picture is for Maori TV and Prime, which were near-unwatchable before, now just need to get me a 500GB internal drive for the PS3...

Its probably better if its not released here to be honest, that way we'll know that the option to change region to "Other" will always exist, not to mention its cheaper to import than it would ever be to buy retail here...

Which ebay did you get yours from? UK? A FAQ I read says you can land them here for $120 to $140 but Im struggling to find one I'd want to buy for less than ?60, then there's shipping on top. That's more than $140 already...

I don't mind not having an EPG, it'd just be a replacement for our VCR. At the moment, taping things is a last resort since the quality is so poor.

Got mine from ricodifranco, $!45 NZ all up including shipping. There were cheaper, but this guys feedback record is impeccable, and when it comes to Ebay thats always worth more to me than a few dollars when buying electronics...

It's not really waiting 2 months to save the $20, more like saving the $20 as a side-effect of waiting two months because I don't really need it urgently. I'm happy you finally got on board, but I (like you, perhaps?) have been waiting a while. I can probably wait another 6 weeks...

It all sound very tempting but alas I have a US PS3 so have no idea if it would work. The US PS3 won't play PAL DVD's but since PlayTV doesn't appear to use the onboard firmware to playback content, it might work. Anybody have any idea if it would work on a US PS3 or willing to let me try one out (I live in Wellington).

I at least found this:

I'm guessing the PS3 runs the background software to allow you to record etc but teh actual Play TV box does the decoding of the Freeview signal and turns it into something that the PS3 recognises."

Hey, just wondering about startup time as I hear it takes about a minute to get from off to watching TV - if you say set the manual timer to record the 6pm news, will it turn on at 5:59pm to start recording? or do you have to set the timer a minute early?

I will answer the recording start time once I try it out.

Regards start up time I would say its less than a minute, probably in the order of 30-40seconds. I'll time it tonight and see.

Hi guys,

Start up times etc are roughly:

PS3 startup is 20 seconds.
Play TV startup is another 25 seconds on that.
Play TV exit back to PS3 menu is 15 seconds.
And PS3 takes 7 seconds to turn off.

Don't think you need to schedule a recording a minute earlier, but can't be sure, I'll try this out and see.

Yes, the picture on the SD channels is nothing short of amazing in my opinion. PlayTV seems to utilise the same upscaling technology as the PS3 has for DVD playback (though the options are not configurable within PlayTV). End result is SD channels look the best I've seen from any TV source box yet.

The hardware is a box with two independent tuners in it. Sony have opted to allow one for recording and one for watching. The same hardware on a PC can allow for twin record plus watch another, but this is a software thing. PlayTV is software that starts up inside the PS3, it's not entirely native to the PS3. There is only one version of the hardware and there's no difference between any hardware in other regions.

The recording is totally background based, so you can play games, watch TV, watch a bluray/DVD etc and it will record in the back ground. Presumably it's just writing the .ts transport stream direct to the hard disk. When you watch a program back from within the library folder of PlayTV it's probably just playing this .ts file. When you export the file from the libray folder to the main video section of the XMB/main menu it appears to be converted into a standard file type at that stage.

(It appears to be a genuine bug in the process here, in that the PS3 itself can not play back the AAC+ audio format natively, so right now this export process only really works for TV3 content with the dolby soundtrack. However, all files apparently play if you copy them off and play on another computer capable of playing the AAC+ soundtrack. Hope that makes sense!)

The harmony thing I was mentioning Bazzer was just for WAF. The wife/family will enjoy this more if they don't have to learn a few odd buttons on the hand controller/bluray remote. If I can map the record function to the actual harmony record button this will be accepted a lot easier than them needing to learn record is the select button etc. Just a personal thing that relates to my circumstances to make it easier to use.

Cool - might be worth a punt to get one and if it doesn't work, there's always Trademe!

Currently I record all Freeview content on a PC using GBPVR and play it back using a Popcorn Hour. But it cannot playback AAC-HE audio so I have to transcode it on the PC before the PCH can play it. The PC can play it using PowerDVD and I suspect gbpvr with the Monogram codec but I am having problems with the remote so it's all keyboard and mouse driven which isn't great for the WAF.

If PlayTV allocates a button the the original remote for record, then of course you can map that to the red circle on the Harmony! What is that used for currently, hmmm... Probably nothing I guess?
