DishTV S7090 Needed Features List:

- EIT EPG (ESG) that shows more than Now/Next for Australian channels. VU+ shows 8 day EPG for these channels and allows booking from the EPG.

- fully independent tuner functions

- recording more than 2 services at once

- ability to copy/play/stream content from DTR HDD onto a PC via LAN
- ability to copy content from DTR HDD to USB HDD
- expand storage space using USB HDD

- stream video files from PC/file server onto DTR via LAN

- make the user manual a little more helpful? more suitable for a high dollar product

I may have been a tad hasty in my post above. While I'm sure I have a full EPG for Freeview, SBS, and Ch9, I want to check on whether I have one for Sky or not. Since I don't subscribe I was going on the basis of thinking I'd seen it, but I just had a look and it's not showing at the moment. That could be for the reason I mentioned above - I've not tuned to the Sky transponders recently, so the EPG buffer may be empty.

I can't check at the moment though - I'm busy recording four programs off two transponders while I watch another one recorded earlier, now with the ads removed to make it watchable, retrieved across my LAN from the USB drive attached to my iMac.
(Gotta love that Vu+ Duo!)

OK - a tuner came free and I took a look at the EPG for a few (3) Sky channels. Keep in mind that I don't have a subscription to Sky, or an access card, and I'm not using any "trickery", like card-sharing.

Two of the sky channels had an 8 day EPG; one seemed only to have now and next. It's not a complete survey by any means, but I think it proves the point.

I just got an email from the supplier advising that streaming and copy to USB were planned features for a future firmware update. I think if it had those features it would tip me over the line into purchasing, but I will wait until they are actually added rather than relying on statements of intent from the vendor that may or may not actually be delivered on.

Add to the list:

1. A 30 or 60 second skip function for dealing with ad breaks. Absence of this is the main reason I haven't gone with MySky - I *love* the 60 second skip on my DVD recorder.

2. letting two of these talk to each other over a network - so if I install two I can network them and watch something recorded in the spare room on the living room unit.

Ok, firstly, thanks for comments and yes I am a bit of a numpty - something inside my head said epg was the red button. WOW the eight day thing with the series linking is cool - now this is what i parted with cash for!

Secondly, should have realised the sbs and nine transponder is vertical polarity so of course would negate tuning to horizontal transponders - thanks for pointing me to that one. Perhaps for the general public dish tv should put that in their manual - would stop some head scratching.

Finally on the wishlist thing,

1.I think splitting the tuners is a necessity and will be uploading that firmware upgrade as soon as its available
2. streaming - not that bothered to be honest, and think as a broad spectrum box for the general public is unecessary, but hey if it can be added on why not.
3. expanding storage onto usb/enabling removal of copyrighted content, well that would be the cherry on top, I am however highly sceptical on that one though, as a certified box I cant see it happening, but would encourage dish tv or freeview to come forward and at least clear the whole issue up.
4.Finally i think they should add a scheduled list of manually programmed recording events & epg recording events all in one place, so its easy to see where clashes will occur, there is no warning of a clash until it actually happens - at least with the manual setup - i havent played much with the epg recording yet.

Your point 4 - it's a good point, but with a working epg, there isn't a huge need for "manual" timer settings.

Unfortunately this is impossible. I know from long discussions before that this is a point that Freeview and their associated broadcasters can not budge on. They are free channels and so are funded by ads and ad skipping of any kind is not allowed.

DishTV can not do this even though they would love to.

gwf I understand why you are skeptical but elsewhere on geekzone is another discussion of the DishTV T1020 Freeview|HD USB PVR and it already allows removal of certain content.

Basically Freeview's rule is that SD content can be removed, but HD content can not. It is a rule passed down from the content providers to Freeview.

So DishTV has run with this opportunity and added the feature on the T1020, so there is hope that when the USB features are added to the S7090 - the same rules will apply... as all of Freeview's content is SD via satellite.... ALL content on the S7090 should be removeable!

gwf, do you mean that there is no list of scheduled manual timer bookings?

Or because you mention all in one place and clashes, do you mean that there is no list that combines the scheduled bookings from the Freeview EPG and your manual bookings? So you have no way of seeing whether your manual timer will clash with the Freeview EPG timer?

Mac2008, refer page 14 of the manual at the bottom of the page is the wake up timer menu - this the only place manual recordings are shown, they cannot all be displayed on screen together each is refered to Timer No 1, 2, 3 etc so is pretty tricky to memorise and compare each as you scroll through.

But added to that is if you book something on the epg slightly before a manual recording on one the V polarity transponders, the manual recording just gets overridden, there is a brief on screen flash at the time but otherwise nowt.

Menus should be better set up to highlight these clashes.

Similarly frustrating (but understandable) is while watching a freeview channel, if a manually booked recording is starting on a V polarity transponder, you get uncerimoniously booted out of your show on freeview to the channel being recorded. It makes sense when u think about what is happening, it just leaves a bad taste.

I think the seperating the tuner is a must have.

If the lnb can only output one polarity at a time then you are going to get these clashes and 'crash outs' etc. Separating the tuners would be good if you could get an LNB with dual outputs, or a multiswitch so each tuner could see each polarity etc etc.

The satellite side of things seems to have skipped a bit of the freeview restrictions, in that it still allows you tune other satellites etc. Given freeview sat is only SD then maybe they can move to allow the network port to access the recordings etc.

Having the maps/email/weather applications in the unit is pretty cool for a basic unit. Just hope those providers keep going, otherwise they will be useless in future.

There really should be one list for all future scheduled recordings, be them manual or via the MHEG5 EPG. These should be labelled with names where possible (ie when booked off the EPG) so you can make sense of it.

Getting used to this machine now, a few points:

1. i have found a list of future recording bookings, strangely it is found in the library of recordings not in the menu where the bookings are made. It is found by opening the libarary-hit the blue button for options and scroll down to scheduled bookings. epg bookings are named as you would expect, manual bookings have a number & cannot be changed until completed & in the libaray. Again, this info should be in the users manual.
2. epg recordings are slick & successful, this is a very nice easy to use unit. Just dont try recording off your aussie channels without thinking carefully!
3. some form of epg/eit for those aussie channels would be a huge boon for this machine.
4. Good work DishTV, keep up the good work. I look forward to future upgrades to split the tuners & add external storage.

I think this pretty much winds up this post, feel free to ask more questions I will be happy to help.

According to the manual USB is for HDD expansion, surely this is misleading advertising
if this is not implemented.

I had an early dish TV receiver that had a number of software glitches, that despite
the advertised ability for software updates ... to the best of my knowledge it was never fixed.
I've emailed Dish TV enquiring into this unit earlier in the week but received no reply

Vu+ Duo has 15 sec / 1 min / 5 min skip forward and backward buttons and after mastering the use of these during the past 2 weeks or so, we simply don't see the adverts any more :D

I never use the FFWD or REW buttons because Skip is far superior, once you learn how to use it to best advantage. Yet another benefit of ditching MySky in favour of Vu+ Duo!
