Flippikat: Sounds promising. An extra bonus would be a "TVNZ Classic" channel which would be a revamp of Heartland, only on a free platform.

Makes sense to me, as the content is already there in TVNZ archives.

This would be awesome!  Yes the programming is not only already in their archives, much of it was paid for by tax payers before the Government of the day lifted the charter.  There was nothing more aggravating than if you wanted to see this treasure trove of publicly funded programming you had to walk the great pay-wall of Sky.

Although I don't do sports I acknowledge this channel is great news for those who do do sports.  With the news this week of the massive profit TVNZ made I'm hoping they'll see their way to fill their downtime with some content from the archives.

The content that screened on Heartland is already digital so would take next to no resources to set up a schedule.  To sweeten the deal for TVNZ they could place internal promos in the breaks for TV1 and TV2.

TVNZ have signed a deal to broadcast AFL, started this weekend (only found out with 5 minutes left in the last game grr), they have the remaining finals series games on the pop up channel. Then next year 3 games live per week, plus another 2 live or delayed each week. so 5/9 games will be televised here. look forward to it, been missing flicking on the tv and catching some afl since sommet sports folded. The web page also says they will be showing some games from the 1987 RWC, along with the golf that has already been announced http://tvnz.co.nz/tvnz-pop-up-channel/6378472

Good to see some decent sport on offer on FTA TV

I do think TVNZ are trying to go back to a dedicated sports channel model they had when Freeview first started and before they decided +1 channels were a lazy replacement for individual channels they shut down.

Still hoping they launch a "Heartland" type channel after Sky dropped it.  As I've previously mentioned it would cost stuff all to run as they already have (own?) all the content which tax payers already paid to have made.

Why don't they just upload all the TVNZ Heartland type programs to Youtube? As you have said, taxpayers have already paid for that content, and youtube is essentially free infrastructure for them to show them. The only cost is really uploading them. They would also probably benefit from some advertising from youtube.

NFL nice! Now they just need to get rid of the plus one channels to enable the pop up to go HD..

Does this kill Sommet completely?
It couldnt raise the crowdfunding target and TVNZ is acquiring more and more of the sports rights that Sommet used to have.  Hopefully TVNZ adsales can generate enough ad revenue to keep some sports on FTA.

This probably ends the chances of Sommet coming back, but you'd think TVNZ have deeper pockets than a plucky little startup. It's great to have something new on Freeview that's not a +1, shopping channel or foreign language channel.

Hopefully this is a sign of more channels to come - movies, news, kids shows, archival stuff? Mediaworks, take note.

They are gone as most of their sports have been divvied up. Be interesting to see what ad revenue they get for NFL and wether anyone actually watches the adverts? If watching it later after recording removing the ads and the other wasteage in a game of NFL can get 90 minutes + out of a 3 hour game.

Was speaking to a NFL fan friend of mine and he was slightly dissappointed that 2 of the games were the same as the ESPN ones as 4 different ones would have made him much more happier.

They could only get two different ones to espn, as espn has all the prime time games (Thursday night, Sunday night and Monday night) the only other time slots are on Sunday when they have have two different kick off times, I think ~5am and ~8:45am our time.
