Thanks Butlerboy.  That's what I figured, which is why I now have mine plugged in to a timer set to do a power off/on each day at 6am.

wigwam3: Just a thought MurrayM - when you unzip the installation files to the USB drive, do you remove other files from the previous version.  Some of the files have the same name and get copied over, but there is at least 1 file that remains.  It is possible that when you go to install 3.21 it picks up some other version files.

Yup, I always remove all files from the USB drive before unzipping the upgrade to the USB drive.  But thanks for the suggestion.

MurrayM: I tried upgrading to 3.21 (from 3.20) and the upgrade appeared to go smoothly but upon restarting I got the Welcome message for several seconds and then the video output stopped (TV reported no video on that HDMI input).  I often get this happening and usually turning the unit off and on will fix it (although sometimes I have to do this 3 or 4 times before I get the video back).  This time I tried turning it off and on 15 times before I gave up and did a rescue to get back to 3.20, which is working ok.  This is my second attempt to upgrade to 3.21, the previous attempt failed in the same way; I just couldn't get any video out of the unit apart from the Welcome screen.

Stuff recorded on the 3rd of March have names, I guess that's thanks to running 3.20.

Stupid question, but when you started the MagicTV and had no video output on HDMI, did you ever try checking if there was an output from composite video? Also, did you try selecting a different HDMI input (or any other video input) on the TV, and then changing back to the HDMI input from the MagicTV?

After I do a MagicTV restart, I sometimes get no video output on the TV. If I then change to a different HDMI input on the TV, and then swap back to the MagicTV HDMI input, all is sorted.

I have also noticed after a week or so the MagicTV menus were getting sluggish and when pressing play, pause, FF etc the unit took some time to respond. A restart did fix that. With the previous firmware versions having random restarts, I suspect that those random restarts masked the sluggish menu fault. My neighbour also reported the same issue with sluggish menus etc. Other than that fault though, ver 3.21 has been running faultlessly for both myself and my neighbour.

wigwam3, my last comment to you about not doing a restart was a bit premature.

Power cycling without shutdown seem a little unkind.  I suppose if you're not writing anything it should be OK but I wouldn't tempt fate unless I had to.  I use the timer standby feature (and timer startup 5 minutes later) every morning and that seems to be enough to initiate some housekeeping routine.  Before I started doing that (on 3.17 I think) my 3600 would become very laggy and eventually crash.
I don't auto-standby after recording because often it re-boots after return from standby.
I have occasionally had HDMI negotiation problems.  I changed to component output and had no further problems.  Sometimes cycling the TV power would recover HDMI, sometimes changing TV HDMI input away and back would recover HDMI and sometimes I had to shutdown and restart the 3600.  I couldn't discern a pattern.
I have occasional loss of audio since 3.20.  Changing channel on the 3600 seems to restore audio.  I haven't had to reboot the 3600 to restore operation.

While we might wish for better, the 3600 is at least a 5 year old design from a small design team with limited resources.  I think these quirks go with that territory.  For me this device (and presumably the 3700 too) stands head and shoulders above the rest, primarily because of Ian's 1 min / 8 sec skip feature.  I hate the freeview EPG but apart from Tivo it seems to be the only easy game in town.  I got a Tivo two days after they stopped selling new accounts with PC connectivity.

No question is stupid, so fire away with any suggestions!

No, I didn't try using composite cables, but I did try switching HDMI inputs on the TV and also turning the TV off and back on.

If I'm feeling bored I might try upgrading again.

Have you tried using a different USB drive?

No, I guess that's worth a try too, thanks for the idea!

I had the Timer Standby/Start up set for 6-6:10 am each morning but it only lasted 4 days before it got a bit sluggish.  A full power off/on got it right again, so I do a MTV3600 Timer Standby at 5:50am followed by a Mains Power off/on using the mains timer at 6:00/6:10 each day.  With this precaution, I am feeling reasonably safe - touch wood.

I'll remember that sequencing idea if I feel a need to power cycle - touch wood twice.

RingoTB: For those that are trying firmware ver 3.20, be aware that both myself and a friend who also has a MagicTV 3600 had the following problems running ver 3.20:

When turning on the Magic TV, the video and audio outputs fail. The unit sometimes comes up with a picture of the live broadcast that is frozen, but generally it comes up with just a black screen. We can change channels, and get the channel information bar come up to display the info but the actual picture remains black. We can bring up the MagicTV list of recorded programs, view it and cycle through to choose one. When that program starts to play, all there is is a black screen with no audio. FF scanning does not work, but if we use the 10 minute jump, we can advance through the program in 10 minute intervals. The playback timebar comes up, and we can see the playback indicator position advancing 10 minutes each time the skip button is pressed. Other than that, the screen remains black.

Turning the MagicTV off using the power button on the remote does not work, but turning the MagicTV off and then on at the power switch on the back resets everything.

Sometimes the MagicTV will not power off after recording a program (Auto Standby is enabled) and the unit effectively remains frozen until it is powered off.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has these issues. None of these issues seem to affect ver 3.21

I have a 3600 also

I also have had video and audio problems it comes up on screen that there is no signal , i have stopped using a hdmi connection and gone the composite route this appears slightly more stable althought this does have  the same problem just not as often

i did try other hdmi cables and other tv hdmi inputs but the problem still continues

I also have the problem of not being able to turn of from the remote , before it freezes switching channels becomes very laggy with huge delays

i am runing firmware 6.08

I would try running firmware 3.21. So far I have been running it for about 14 days in total and I have had no major problems. If you do try 3.21, don't forget to do a factory reset after the swap from ver 6.x back to ver 3.x.

Okay finally got round to doing this , back to hmdi connection fingers crossed

2lostkiwis: I have patched v3.20 here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pf8idpi2vpfexcr/MTV3600v320NZpatchv16.zip
I will try and do v3.21 soon.

I have patched v3.21 here:

I guess this is probably close to the last update I will do for the MTV3600 platform. Possibly there might not be any more official firmware. I have moved to a MTV3700 and after finally getting it patched have found it to be a great replacement. Discussion can be found here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=164337

Thanks heaps Ian. I really appreciate the time you have spent providing the patches.

I got a 3700 for my parents a couple of years ago so I will have to keep an eye on your other thread.

I can't thank you enough for your continuing interest and firmware modifications for the MTV3600.  With the Magic TV 3.21 firmware fixing the missing program name problem and your modification my 3600 is working great.

I can firmly say it is better than when I purchased it back in December 2009.  Thanks once again for all your work. -- Michael

Hear hear!  There is probably a thank-you due to wklie and the team at MagicTV too.  It must be very tempting not to support an aging PVR that you've already obsoleted.

Too right! Thanks all round. Just updated to modified v3.21 & am very pleased.
