 Ask the seller a question
Hi I believe this receiver is not HDCP compliant. Does it matter? Will it still output the signal of a HD broadcast in HD and not downgrade the output to normal definition? Thanks  posted by: glam101 (9 )  9:34 pm, Mon 23 Mar
Why do you believe that? And what are you worried about? I can assure you that the set is 100% HD in its output HDMI and VDO component (720p and 1080i)and works exactly as certified receivers if not better. It is very easy to find out once connected to any LCD or Plasma sets and as always from jacksuper money back guarantee if that is not the case. Cheers 9:49 pm, Mon 23 Mar

As stated by jacksuper in Trademe auction 209593060:

A Yes, I was talking to the senior software engineer who in charge and he assured it needs some changes in the hardware much more in the software to have a stable PVR and you need to have the right remote control for all PVR options. However you could update this set to PVR function as Peter claimed but it will not be stable enough to handle all functions. Cheers 9:38 pm, Tue 24 Mar

That was me asking  "jacksuper" the qustion on auction no: 209593060.
I then put jacksupers answer to importer Peter (cordlessman) on auction no: 209558007 and this was his typical "Peter" reply.

"total rubbish! We await factory for s/ware...out of our hands, unfortunately."

Spong: Peter (Escher) still states it's coming, but I've asked him several times whether it will be a free download, or a $50 charge. He refuses to answer me and ignores all requests for an answer. See Trademe auction no: 208063469. If there is a charge, I feel he's been very dishonest and won't win any friends over this.
Of course it's possible that he's more interested in taking more money from ET owners than winning friends.

dodgemnz: Regarding
"2/ Lazy remote?
remove plastic decal...front window on Receiver, with some sticky tape...
Then check that IR sensor is not set up inside case."

The other problem i have noticed is that some times it will turn on with the remote then immeditaly turn itself back off and it can take several frustrating attempts to get it to stay on. Other times it just wont turn on at all.

I used to have this problem. I turn on by pressing a channel selection button, I just press channel 1 and it comes on straight away.....Funny thing is though, it comes on to channel 6  !! haven't worked out why it should.

Unit should turn on and off using power button exactly as you'd expect.  Any other behaviour is just not normal.  Check with another ET remote if possible, they have been known to fail.

I know everyone is waiting for the PVR update, but does anyone honestly think it's going to be stable enough to trust leaving the unit to record your favourite show to watch at another time?

Only thing saving this for me is PlayTV for PS3 is nowhere in sight either.  Makes me wonder again who Zinwell slept with to get that big a jump on everyone else?!  I mean how did they get their product to market this far ahead of EVERYONE else?!  I'm dreaming of one unit with twin tuners and all free to air channels on the freeview platform, but it's just not happening.

I have now tried to turn it on with the channel buttons but it makes no difference. I have even tried the any button Wink. I then waited about 5 minutes and tried again and it came on set the correct time and flicked off again.
I checked the remote output with my digital camera and it is very dim compared with my car key remote??

What are you talking about?!
If you have problems with the remote, go back to your supplier to get it sorted, this remote not working thing is not normal.  Try and get a second remote to try as this could be the problem, or the box.  Failing that, there was a firmware release to fix those boxes that had seriously bad remote control problems, so try the latest firmware too if you haven't already.  Good luck.

4. When will TiVo be available in New Zealand?

The TiVo media device will be available to customers in New Zealand by Christmas 2009.

So about the same time as the ET PVR update then

Any details as to whether this will allow use of the MHEG EPG to establish recordings? This brand was mentioned in another thread on GZ - I remember the model no. was the same as the Freeview-certified model; would Freeview be ok with using external drives for recording HD?

Or, you could buy it at Bond & Bond for $299 - http://www.bondandbond.co.nz/audiotv/dvd-players-recorders/set-top-boxes/jcmatthew-dvbt901-freeviewhd-approved-terrestrial-set-top-box/prod44070.html

Although it doesn't mention PVR capability, so maybe it is identical except for that? Seems strange to me...

Personally, after this ET fiasco, I'd wait and see what you'd be getting for your money.  If it it really does have PVR functionality then you have to ask about the 8 day EPG?  And what format does it record in?  What is the User Interface like?  Does it stutter, pixelate, drop sound , have a dodgy clock?  Can it  play back 3rd party media?

From the other JCMatthews kit I have seen (ie digital photo frames etc), the quality and features leave a lot to be desired.  Hopefully they can improve on this record.

BUT

If it proves successful, they sure as hell won't be stoppping at 50 units and the price will drop as well.

Hold your horses fellas.  Get some feedback on this unit before sinking your hard earned $$

Personally I have leaned my lesson from this ET unit AND THE COUNTLESS BROKEN PROMISES FROM PETE.

With the Vantage unit coming along in leaps and bounds, and the announcement of Tivo before the years end, it looks like things are starting to heat up in the NZ DVB-T PVR market.

On an different note look at what you can do if you listen to your customers and add features and fix bugs as requested:
http://www.dtvs.co.nz/forum/index.php?board=14.0

It looks like the the importers of the Vantage box are being quite open about their developments (ie 8 day EPG and the cost) but at least they can record NOW and out of the box. See what you can do with a bit of collaberation and working WITH your customers . . . . . . . . .
