The way I upgraded my disk was:

1. Remove the old drive from the MagicTV, complete with recorded programs.
2. Insert the new bigger drive, and run through the rescue procedure.
3. Remove the new drive and mount both the new and old MagicTV drives in a PC together.
4. Insert a Linux CD and boot to that. I just ran it in demo mode directly from the CD.
5. Log in as root and then copy the data from the two partitions on the old drive to the corresponding partitions on the new drive.
6. Reinstall the new drive into the MagicTV.

It now has all the old recordings (and I think it even keeps your recording schedule).

It should. 2.5" and 3.5" SATA HDD connections are identical.

Some questions to those experiencing the auto reboots right out of standby:

1. Is the reboot always preceded by a message of Magic TV is rebooting itself?
2. Are the video and audio normal before it reboots?
3. How much time is there between the wake up from standby and the reboot? A few seconds? 30 seconds? Several minutes?
4. Which channel (number) is it on when it's rebooting itself?
5. Which channel (number) is the last recorded channel before it previously went into stand by?
6. Which channel (number) is the last recorded programme playback before it previously went into stand by?
7. Timeshift - instand rewind setting - On or off?

1. No or I have not seen it.
2. Mostly. Occasionally sound only.
3. Typically 5 -10 seconds.
4. Not relevant. Repeatable from any channel.

7. Off. I have not used "On" for a long time.

Needless to say with perhaps 80% reboot success rate )-: "Auto Standby" remains off.

I am reluctant to test any further. It might not start again!!!

I have only had it happen once with me. It happens to my wife all the time. She advises:

1. Yes, message saying MagicTV will restart soon. OK.
2. Yes. Picture and sound were there before it restarted.
3. It appears to restart when the Play button is pressed to bring up a list of recorded programs. So time varies depending on how quickly you press a button on the remote.
4. Unsure
5. Various
6. Various
7. Timeshift setting is Auto. ie, it only starts if Pause is pressed during liveTV. Setting is for 3 Hours.

Auto standby is set to on.

It always restarts though. It appears to only restarts once per day.

Yes, I forgot to mention this. I turn my MagicTV on and when I get picture I immediately hit Play to bring up the list of recorded programmes, and then I get the message that the MagicTV will restart. There's an Ok button below the message but the message disappears after 5 or so seconds and the MagicTV restarts without me pressing Ok on the remote.

+1 on the reboot issue. It has also started hanging more frequently when waking itself up from sleep to record a show. I was thinking this is the same bug related.

Surely it cant be a HDD issue if everyone is having the same bug all together.

I have tried
-upgrading to the latest firmware
-Restoring factory defaults
-Checking for and repairing HDD errors from the magic box menu system
to no avail.

Here's hoping for a fix soon!!

I've been running 3.17 firmware since it was released, and upgraded to the hacked version once that was available. The restart issues have only recently started - say since August or September 2012.

Hi there I have 3.17 hacked and occasionally have the issue.

My problems started with recent channel shuffleing in Christchurch and seems to spike after channels are either added or deleted.

I have my program view set to series and affer each of these strange restarts it reverts to the standard view, and also changes the order in the right hand payne from chronological to recent first.

A minor annoyance for such an awesome product. I certainly will be upgrading the hard drive in the not to distant future I find 500GB just not quite enough, and from discussions here it will most likely be a Western digical red.

I've been having the restart issue for a while now and have been corresponding with DishTV support. It doesn't happen all the time and I haven't been able to determine any pattern.

The first theory was that one of my Panasonic components was sending something down the HDMI cable because of Viera Link. I made sure all of my Panasonic components (TV, DVD Player and Amplifier) had Viera Link disabled. (The TV was set to "on" but the other two were already "off".) That didn't help. (I didn't think it would since it's been set up that way for a while and hasn't caused any problems.)

The next theory was that Freeview has changed something in the signal and that is causing the restarts. Dish TV provided me with a beta version of the 3.19 firmware and asked me to see if that solved the issue. It didn't.

I'm now waiting for DishTV's next suggestion.

We'll try & capture more information next time it happens. Hopefully within the week.

1. Yes. Always Magic TV message saying restarting
2. Video & audio normal
3. Restart happens in the first few seconds - usually waiting for menu
4. Very hard to say which is current channel. Hopefully it will be the same after it restarts.
5. Very hard to say what last recording activity was - I'll try & remember to look next time.
6. Very, very hard to say. "What was the last thing you watched the previous night?"!
7. Timeshift instant rewind is off.

Oh yeah... running V3.17 hacked.
Suddenly started misbehaving some months ago - relatively constant failure rate since then.
