Now running 3.19b3 and the restarts seemed to have stopped.

However, a couple of times the Magic box has started up, shown "TV3" (the channel it was last on) on the front screen and the sound and video were normal. Then the video and sound stopped and the Magic box is still showing "TV3" on the front screen. It is almost the same as when it used to restart, except that it is not restarting.

I've confirmed that the ST1000VM002 and ST2000VM003 respectively have one and two platters. They are probably the best replacement drive options at the moment although you'd have difficulty finding them. You will have to accept more noise from a 2 platter drive than a 1 platter drive but the 2tb Pipeline HD is still relatively quiet.

There is a setting for Magic TV to spin down the system HDD when it is idle for several minutes.

Is it only in new firmware or the 3700?

(By the way, for reliability I actually prefer the HDD to spin constantly rather than spin up/down as needed.

Oh I agree. I wasn't meaning having the hard drive power down after several idle minutes but the option to have the drive's spindle only first spin up when needed instead of automatically happening each time the Magic TV comes out of standby. Alot of televisions don't have an internal DVB-T receiver so in those cases many Magic TV usage sessions go without utilising the hard drive.

Yes, it's in the 5.x beta firmware for 3600.

Since MediaWorks changed its broadcast about a week ago, I suspect the "self-reboot right after waking up from standby" issue may disappear.

In case anybody still experiences this issue, here's another beta firmware to try out (for those users ONLY):

I can confirm the c80% reboot symptom reported by me on 07 Nov has apparently automagically been self fixed within the last 10 days or so.
i.e. No more reboots on power up from standby.

Fingers are crossed.

Firmware 3.17 patched to +-4 minute skip.

I think you may be correct. My wife had it restart on her on almost a daily basis, but it has not occurred in the last one or two weeks.

I'm running 3.17NZ.

Was it confined to people in regions beyond Auckland?

Probably. I hope there'll be feedbacks to confirm or disprove my hypothesis.

I don't have definitive details. I only know that MediaWorks changed its broadcast on Sept. 25 as stated on its web site. The technical changes, which I've been told, involve much more EIT than before, and some encoder changes. EIT changes cannot cause MTV3600 to show an on-screen prompt then auto reboot. An encoder change or messed up PMT could.

I've been told Mediaworks changed its broadcast and reduced its EIT again, for about a week.

I don't have the exact date of change, but what you said coincides with the Nov. 16 date in JCMatthew thread perfectly.

I've been trying to initialize a 2TB WD Green drive with advanced Sector format to work with my MTV3600.

So far I haven't had any success. I tried using DD to clone the first partition from my 3600's Hitachi 500GB drive to my new drive but it kept failing to complete, with a read error from the 500GB drive.

Then I tried to do a complete clone of the old drive to the new one with the intent of then expanding the second partition to cover the remaining space.

This failed with error messages reporting the partitions were not on (4K) sector boundaries.

If I just partition and format the new drive then use the MTV's rescue operation to set up the drive can I do this without it formatting the new HDD?
How do I go about this?

If you get a read error, your 500GB likely has bad sectors.

I can't offer detailed steps, but I think it should be done as follows:
1. In the MTV3600 with the original 500GB HDD, remove all files from Trash, then perform a check system disk operation first
2. Use a Linux boot CD or http://www.partedmagic.com to partition and format the 2TB: create a 400MB ext3 first partition, and a JFS partition for the rest.
3. Do a recursive file copy such as cp -a or cp -dpR from old drive first partition to new drive first partition, and old drive second partition to new drive second partition. If cp stops due to read error, you may need to manually avoid the offending files (Alternatively, I suspect it may be possible to simply drag and drop all the directories and files in GUI to do the recursive copy, but I'm not 100% sure about this.)

The daily reboots have stopped in our household too - thank god! It was getting so frustrating. I knew it had to be something with the broadcast because there were so many of us with the same problem all at once.

Getting back to the various firmware versions and some patches that change the fast-forward and fast rewind, does anyone know where or who I can get a recent firmware version from, patched with the +4min & -6sec like an earlier version had (around 3.13?)??? Those are my favourite time spans as they let me skip 4 minute add breaks by clicking FastForward 4 times, and rewind to repeat something we didn't hear properly with a single FastRewind. Perfection, but apparently not available now. :(
