3700 was never broken and probably never will be so no custom ffw rew etc

Thanks Jimmy22 - no way am I watching ads on a recording. It looks like I'm back to the drawing board. Gutted!

Just fast forward the ads. At 32x it only takes a few seconds to zip through the ads.

yes to clarify you can ffw , but the 3600 has customisable skip increments due to a legend making custom software for it . However I would personally swap my 3600 with custom skip for a 3700 and use the std ffd because it uses less power on standby but im odd like that :) .

So you can fast forward through the ads? I don't mind doing that even if it is a manual process. Cheers mate.

yes sorry , didnt read you question properly , i assumed you were asking the usual and skimmed :(

you can def fast forward with a 3700 , its not as good as a 3600 but it will do the job just fine

you can get pretty good at timing it to stop just right at 32x ffd , i believe skip is 10min fwd and 10min back which is fairly useless for avoiding ads

Throughout the thread, the terms fast forward and skip are interchanged to a point it gets a bit blurred Skipping would be brilliant but I don't mind donating 10 secs of my life to fast forward. Low power (and subsequent low noise) is also important to me.

I really appreciate the help guys - looks like I'm 500 bucks down come 5pm :)

I definitely recommend the 3700. Had a panasonic but pixelation all the time and unreliable that was a $1200 BW880. Then I had dish tv 1050 unreliable so JBhifi and $577 got the 3700. Best thing I ever did. Been super reliable, you can cut out the adds on recordings but that is a little time consuming. You can easily fast forward through the ads. Very happy with it

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Definitely you can fast forward through the ads! The ads are just part of the video stream, the unit doesn't know where they are and so can't force you to watch them. FF isn't as nice as a 3 or 4 minute skip but it still works well.

The tuner quality of the Pana was the main reason I took it back, looked awful against the inbuilt tuner in my Pana VT30 tv. Awful to use too. So the pic's good is it? What about fan noise - is there any in practical terms?

Picture quality on 3700 is excellent and unit is virtually silent. Hard drive can hardly hear and fan very quiet also. If you go right up to the unit you can hear it but a meter back cant hear it. One of the quietest I have heard.

well that explains why I dont hear the fan. I have computer with AMD Trinity cpu and on bios setting silent it is impossible to hear the fan so thought the MagicTV may be same.

Has anyone experienced certain highly used buttons on the remote not working effectively. I Have to press the play and fast forward buttons really hard to get them to work.

Just googled a new remote and looks like around $40 to replace.

I repaired mine mid October last year using this product (jump forward and backwards buttons hard to press):

It's still going strong. The silicon was also releasing an oily substance, a few washes in the dishwasher fixed that too.

Remote control buttons hard? Yep, started about 6 months ago. The main culprit is the Volume Up button which triggers a left arrow command! Infuriating as it skips the programme back to the beginning or last bookmark! I started bookmarking every time I wanted to adjust the volume up.

In the end I gave up and switched over to my Harmony universal remotte which I love anyway, but the magictv remote was very nice to use until the buttons became flaky.
