Introducing Firstlight Broadcasting Network. New Zealand's new
Christian television channel.
The Firstlight channel will begin broadcasting on 1st July 2012 via
nationwide terrestrial Freeview.

Firstlight is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with the common
mission to proclaim God's love throughout New Zealand. Firstlight
aims to broadcast the best selection of ground-breaking Christian
programmes sourced from Hope channel, 3ABN, Creation Ministries,
MissionTV, HCBN and other local sources.
While our programmes will be based on Christian principles, we
believe the programme topics will be of great interest to the general
public and not just limited to a Christian audience."

I guess we won't be seeing a documentary on the Origin of Species ... at least, not the Charles Darwin version.

I see this as a new channel yes, but what I don't see is the exciting bit?

Freeview is 'free view' they are entitled to create a channel, just as those who disagree with it are free not to watch it. If channels like
this are blocked, what next, Rugby channels, Cooking channels, Maori television?

I don't think the content will be my cup of tea, but good luck to you.

Just out of interest though, how are channels like this funded? Can't be cheap to run a TV channel.

I may not agree with their beliefs I do however support their right to have them. It is not compulsory to view it, that little rectangular object with a few buttons that normally sits on the coffee table will those who don't want to watch it.

Who said anything about blocking it?
People have only expressed their dislike of the content - which is absolutely fine.
Perosnally I have no interest in watching the channel, but if god botherers want to fund their own channel then good luck to them.
Hopefully the money spent on that means less money spent on the pamphlets and other junk I regularly get in my letterbox.

The Bill of rights states.....

13 Freedom of thought, conscience, and religion
    •    Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and belief, including the right to adopt and to hold opinions without interference.

Now IMHO that means they are free to hold their beliefs without name calling as are those who don't hold their beliefs.

I don't think name calling is covered under "interference". They are free to have their opinion/religion, but when they choose to broadcast it to the world, the world is free to reply with their own opinions.

Calling the people running a religious broadcast "god botherers" is in no way the same as forcibly converting them to atheism. In the same way that running a religious broadcast is not the same as forcing me to watch it.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
