A new sport channel for Freeview?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/7240600/Sports-body-planning-new-free-to-air-TV-channel

I'd like to see it, especially if "at least 15 national sports organisations" includes the lawn bowls.

And if resources are scarce, as a potential viewer, I'd say a Sports channels has to take precedence over another religious channel, or a rumoured shopping channel. Or we could get rid of the useless plus one channels.

did you actually read it.  Not just soccer but many sports. Ones that dont meet financial demands of Sky TV.  Could be quite interesting having different sports that sky tv doesnt

It is just someone needs to find the time, money and bandwith to get it off the ground......

If it was to launch I dobt that it would be on Freeview Satellite as everything is full now with the launch of Choice TV

Ah didn't we kinda have this already with the V8's being on freeview initially....

Sports is fine, but it's very likely to be the unpopular scraps left over after the SKY monopoly has been through.

Trackside will officially launch on the Freeview Satellite Platform too, you cant say there's no more space,

Trackside won't take up the existing bandwidth. Freeview will point boxes to the unencrypted Sky transponder that Trackside is on.

The Shopping channel will be on Sky only. It was originally going to use TVNZ 7's bandwidth but a public outcry stopped that.

They then managed to rope sky into holding their channel.

You're assuming that the scraps will stay that way forever.

Nobody in NZ had much interest in Australian domestic rugby league until it started getting broadcast free to air here. This was the critical audience building factor that has turned the NRL into the pay TV mainstay that it is today.

Prior to the Stratos collapse I was amazingly starting to develop an interest in Aussie Rules - mostly because it was free to air. I think the if ARL gave broadcasting rights cheap to a mainstream free to air channel then they may be able to follow the path the NRL has taken in NZ. (But they would have to change the sport's name to be taken seriously here :)

Sure it's hard to shift people's sporting preferences, but I think it's healthy to have a situation where the apex sports in NZ have to stop and think about the audience consequences of setting the broadcast accessibility bar so high.

Not at all.  I fully assume that if any sport grew too much in popularity then SKY would grab that too.  Thereby, yes, I do expect that a freeview sports channel will most likely not purchase anything too popular.

It is better to have sports than not to.

Like, when Wimbledon is on I watch it! Just because it is free to air sports.

Good timing if they can launch by the start of the Oceania World Cup qualifying matches (i.e. we can watch the All Whites try to top the Oceania group).
