I hope that this isn't at the expense of C4. Although it does make me wonder if this will replace C4 and the 'god awful' sounding Edge TV will become Freeviews music channel.

Haven't watched traditional TV in quite some time now but groan, they're still stacking on these +1 channels?

Because it doesn't cost them much compared with sourcing new content.

I think they shouldn't be allowed to do this, if they don't show a different content channel they should be forced to drop the frequency and offer it to another provider.

Taken to extreme, the incumbent could acquire more channels and run tv1+1, +2, +3, +4 and claim how many 100s of hours of nz content they show (just repeat the same program over and over and over).

With the growth of ondemand services these catchup channels should be replaced with new content.

Will it be Prime+1, Choice+1, Sommet+1 next? I certainly hope not.

Lots of the +1s exist because when Freeview was a glimmer in the eyes of the networks years ago, they got locked into contracts that said they had to launch additional channels,

Subsequently there has been the GFC and the rise of ondemand digital distribution, that has really hammered them, in order to meet their contract conditions, +1 channels are seen they cheapest option..

UK freeview also have a bunch on +1s, and they also have atleast one +24 channel, which allows viewers to catch yesterdays programmes today :)

I use the +1s to series link the wife's programs on MySky - takes up way less HDD room and she doesn't care that they aren't in HD.

From Freeview:

Please note Mediaworks will be shutting down the TV3 Auckland feed on Optus D1 12456H and Freeview will update the BAT to point approved devices to the new Sky TP.

NZ15 Lower (12644MHz H-Pol). Service ID – 1033

This change is been done to improve bandwidth and enable Mediaworks to launch FOUR +1.

Changes that will be done on 1am 26 June
o    TV3 Auckland Kordia feed will be removed
o    Freeview BAT will point to Sky TP
o    Edge TV will launch on ch9 on both satellite and terrestrial
o    C4 will close
o    FOUR + 1 will launch on ch 11 on both satellite and terrestrial

If only they would do a deal with Sky and get the FTA HD channels for us on Freeview Satellite.
Hardly ever watch Four so a Four+1 won't get used at all.
We do however use the other +1 channels quite a bit.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I wasn't a fan of the +1 channels originally but find I now use them quite regularly.

Complete waste of bandwidth.  Why don't they put their resorces into FOUR HD  !!  The next thing they will be launching +2 and + 3 channels..  What ever happened to DVRs ??

I would have thought it would have made more sense to have Four+1 on channel 9 so that all the +1 channels are grouped together and Edge TV on channel 11.

They will be +24 channels. I think there is better value in making all channels HD, instead of these plus channels, as so many people now have dvrs, and access to on demand, making plus channels less relevant, and wasting the infrastructure.

Simple fact of the matter, DVRs aren't completely the answer, DVR _PLUS_ Timeshift channels are.   As far as TV networks are concerned, there is only so many hours of 'prime-time' TV programming hours, I believe currently they are:  Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday 7:30-9:30   (Sunday and Thursday have smaller windows, but also kind of open).   Then there is the demands: "I want it as soon as it hits the air in America" (or pretty close to hitting the air in America so.... ignoring the logistical nightmare of timezones and their 5 FTA channels + near-infinite quanity of basic+premium cable + UK/AU/other content.....) they've got to compete at times for live share, a DVR can only record X muxs at a time (or channels depending on how smart it is - yay MythTV ;)), so in a way, the timeshift channels give DVRs as well as humans a second chance at recording a program where a conflict may arise.

In addition, I've recorded many-a-show on +1 because I've caught part of the show live while channel surfing or on the tail of the previous show's recording and thought "that is more interesting that I gave the EPG listing credit for", quickly gone in and hit the record button.

Ideally, the TS channels would be +2 (like on Foxtel in Australia where they were super useful especially in Queensland, Foxtel channels ran on NSW TZ, FTA ran on Local TZ), but as we a single TZ country, there isn't the justification for that sadly, +1 is about all we can get away with.

Now to wait for the TVNZ lawsuit.... Just Shoot Me interlaced with One News doesn't sound very appetising ;)

Edit:  I completely agree on HD though, they keep going on about how they are going to bring back 'Fast FOUR' but you can't take that seriously when they are still screening stuff in SD-only.

Wonder how it is going to cope with UHD. There is really no excuse for still broadcasting in SD, although I can't see prime moving to HD.
