Hi all - have an odd problem. Moved the satellite dish yesterday due to roof alteration at home in Chch. Relocated and aligned to correct azimuth etc however no signal ! Except I found there is signal with the cable unplugged from LNB - All channels too !! ( very odd) Can someone advise whats going on here please? I have checked cable continuity which is fine plus it was working ok before moving. Only difference - moved unit and new cable fitting to LNB. Any clues gratefully appreciated! thanks

It's not possible to receive any satellite channels if your satellite box is unplugged from the LNB.
It sounds to me like you have a Freeview TV which you have connected to your dish instead of a UHF antenna. Just what exactly is your setup?

Hi - yes it is .Sorry was not clear enough. Its a Sony TV with Freeview built in. We have been connected to the existing Sky dish for last couple years with no problem until I moved it yesterday.
cheers

i doubt its a freeview satellite TV, it will more than likely be freeviewHD which will be UHF, so coneecting it to your sky dish is not what you want to be doing

Wow. You must be in a good signal area and the cable is working as your antenna, not the dish

Best solution is instal the correct antenna

did you use a satellite set top box.  I dint think Sony that age had a satellite tuner built in as well as terrestrial.  FREEVIEW TV doesnt necessarily work with both terrestrial and satellite, only some do which have both tuners in.  If your sony only has 1 tuner then connecting to satellite wont work

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard  graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner,  Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Well there's your problem. The TV has a UHF Tuner and requires to be connected to a UHF antenna, not a Dish which is for satellite reception. Your TV does not have a satellite tuner. If you are receiving all channels on just the co-ax then you only need to add a small UHF antenna on the end of the coax or perhaps even a cheap indoor UHF antenna may suffice.

If you were doing this without an actual signal meter, I doubt you'll be able to lock on to a satellite that is 30,000km away (Yes! 30,000 km!!)  Get someone with the proper equipment to align the dish correctly otherwise even if you do manage to strike it lucky and get some signal, you'll probably find it'll cut out at the first sign of rain due to being on the 'edge' of the signal.

The OP doesn't have a satellite receiver and is not receiving a satellite signal - (S)he's receiving a UHF DVB-T signal from a terrestrial transmitter.

Legend, receiving UHF off a Satellite dish.

Must be right under a UHF transmitter - the only 'antenna' it looks like you have got is the cable running to the dish.

As mentioned above, you need a UHF aerial. Or a coat hanger by the sounds of it.
