Does anyone know (and im taking a wild stab in the dark with a blunt knife here) would the Play TV attachment for the PS3 from the UK work with the DVB-T TV signals they are currently testing in NZ?
Was going to wait until they came out in NZ but who knows how far away it is and dont want to spend extra money on Freeview if I can get it running through my PS3 for free.

I could be wrong, but I highly doubt it. The UK uses MPEG-2 compression for their terrestrial Freeview broadcasts, whereas NZ will be using MPEG-4. Unless the unit can handle both?

The unit doesn't care what the data stream is, the fact is you will need an NZ specific version of the software.

Details of the playtv were actually originally "leaked" globally by Sony NZs Warwick Light. This would suggest either...

1. Sony NZ is right up on the development of playtv and we can expect a quick release.
or
2. Warwick has pi$$ed of Sony HQ and we aren't going to get any Sony love :P

The original article did bode well.

We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder.

The latest Tone magazine states that Sony will be including the NZ standards in PlayTV. I assume it will be all in the PS3 firmware

Thanks for the info guys.
Think i'll wait until the Play TV Firmware update comes out and see what happens.
Hopefully they'll put an update out soon that will fix the Web Browser Flash Player Issues in the same bundle.

Hmmm if it's in the PS3 firmware does that mean I'm screwed since I have the original 60GB Hong Kong version

I could be wrong but I think that the firmwares are the same worldwide.

Looks like PlayTv is going to be delayed. It has been taken off pre-release order on a lot of sites in the UK and I gather it is now looking at a August/ September release in NZ.

Isn't this all just speculation anyway? All we have got in NZ is a slip-up statement by Sony's NZ Manager last year that this was coming to NZ.

Is there anyone here on these forums with any knowledge of if and when PlayTV will be launched in NZ? Anyone from Sony on these forums? One assumes that Sony will be testing right now for the NZ required changes.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited about the prospect of PlayTV. I didn't buy that HD TV for nothing!

From this Sony press release it was due to be released in Europe early 2008 but now seems delayed so it's unlikely to be here before European release.

Missing NZ DTT launch will be a bummer especially with the Olympics around the corner.

Well it mentions 'other PAL territories'. NZ is fairly well supported by Sony's Playstation business unit, even with the likes of adding NZ music to versions of SingStar. I don't for one minute expect that NZ will be missed out, especially given our emerging DTT market.
